We are jewellery retailers in Orange N.S.W. Australia. We are not actual ‘Benchies” and as such we rely on others to manufacture our custom jewellery.

In the past we would spend hours hand drawing designs for our clients, have numerous conversations with the maker and the client and lose many (unpaid) hours in the process. Custom jobs were about 1-2% of our business in dollar terms.

In 2022 we decided to invest in a CAD drawing programme and settled on JCD. This was very challenging for a bloke in his mid sixties with limited computer capabilities and less manufacturing knowledge.

Using the JCD tutorials I was able to start producing workable sales drawings within a few days and passable STL files within a month! The system paid for itself within six months. I used to use Matrix, and any time a client wanted to make changes I had to rebuild the whole piece with the changes. It was the same thing with my wholesale work. “I have worked for 15 years and 5 years with Rhino Matrix. I have to construct more and more CAD models it was important for me to be able to work effectively. Even small design changes meant to generate a high workload because in Rhino the History of the individual objects will be deleted as soon as they are processed. JCD stores the instructions that lead to a model. So I can make at any point in the tree structure changes or even add new commands. The model is then automatically rebuilt. The construction of series with as different stone sizes is much faster and with less effort than with Rhino with JCD. I do not have to construct each model, but can just change the relevant parameters of the basic model and adapt them to specific locations the construction.
I have tried several parametric programs and decided on JCD, because it is clearly laid out and is stable. With Johns Tutorials and his patient help I quickly learned to work with JCD. Compared with Rhino I constructed just as quickly after only a month, now after 6 months I work much more effectively with JCD.”

“We are a small; family owned and operated, Jewellery Company in a small Suburb, Milford, on the North Shore in Auckland.
We have been using CAD since 2005, and in hind sight, should have started with it sooner. We used a cheaper (or so we thought) CAD program that was tweaked with add on programs (there comes the extra expense) for jewellery design and manufacturing, with constant costly upgrades and challenges.

He would not compromise our long standing relationship for a quick one-off sale, so we jumped in and we’ve never looked back.
We started on Jewelry Cad Dream in March 2014, and now, 120 designs later, we are comfortable to say that it truly was a very wise business investment. We find the program much more advanced, versatile and user friendly than any other CAD program that we’ve experienced.
This tool gives us the opportunity to: – Be competitive in pricing – Give the customer a visual image (rendered like a photo) – Allow the customer to make design changes BEFORE the cost of manufacturing is spent! (This totally eliminates comebacks or re-makes! … Time and money wasters gone!!!!) – It makes for accurate, fast, successful deliveries; quick turnaround means more money in the bank!
CAD can be daunting and somewhat intimidating for us ‘old school’ jewellers, as the youngsters that are better equipped with computer skills are flooding in, BUT don’t be fooled: you need be familiar (and preferably experienced) with the process of manufacturing and especially gem-setting to be able to deliver a successful design file for manufacturing. This offers somewhat of a protection to us as jewellers, and gives us the advantage even if we are not totally computer literate.
Here’s some genuine advice: if you don’t start implementing CAD, and especially Jewelry Cad Dream, in your day to day jewelry manufacturing, you just won’t be able to offer competitive prices and you’ll soon be left behind.

Coming from a SolidWorks background I appreciate the simplicity and straight forward ease of use of Jewelry CAD Dream. I had searched and tested other software before, specifically for jewelry. None had offered the format Jewelry CAD Dream did. This software is very familiar for those who had already worked with some kind of industrial CAD software. If you are just getting started, the learning curve is short and simple. I wish I had known about this software earlier. I recommend this software collection to any Jeweler that wants to take their shop to another level. We have now been using Jewelry CAD Dream for a year now, we don’t regret it.

For me, Jewelry CAD Dream was a game changer, and I’m grateful for every day I’ve been able to work with this software! Since switching, I’ve been 100% more efficient in my design work. Not for every piece, but overall.

Today, variations and modifications are quickly implemented, for example, a simple edge rounding. I can easily turn these on/off in Jewelry CAD Dream with a single click or elegantly change the radius with the mouse wheel, and I can see the result immediately. None of this was possible in the old CAD system.

Today, I create model variations of a ring (ring size/stone size) by simply entering these two values. All other measurements, such as shank width/thickness and grip thickness, stone position, etc., are generated fully automatically using formulas. And it’s easier than you think to work with formulas once you understand the simple logic. This also guarantees that the variations exhibit harmonious growth. In 5 minutes, a new ring can be generated, where the stone height and prong thickness always perfectly match the stone diameter. Only the new reference number in the ring then needs to be changed manually. A double-click is all it takes, and the text can be edited.

The transition was very easy for me thanks to the more than 100 easily understandable and freely accessible tutorial videos. For everything I wanted to do, I found a suitable video with similar elements. This allowed me to see step by step how to do it. I quickly improved with each video.

Like many others, I took my first steps with CAD using the programs commonly used in the jewelry industry at the time. But I quickly became bothered by some important things:

I always had to save intermediate steps as backups to be able to make any changes later. This made it very difficult to keep track of things, and even with backups, subsequent changes were very time-consuming. Unfortunately, the “pseudo” history was also destroyed by many commands or simply moving elements, and the Boolean command could not be undone. This led to a rather inefficient way of working.

This has changed completely with ‘Jewelry CAD Dream’, because changes can often be made in seconds thanks to the history tree.

If I previously wanted to create a new variant of a model (e.g., a new stone or ring size), I had to design almost the entire ring from scratch again. For each variant, I would repeat the same steps over and over again. The program was stupid and didn’t save work steps. It forgot immediately after entering the dimensions that the profile was 3.2 mm wide. If you later want it to be 3.5 mm, you drag a little here and there, and the result is more random. After a short time, the originally cleanly constructed ring became a patchwork that was not really controllable.

And how practical would it be if I could simply tell a prong: “At 0.5ct you have this diameter, and at 1.0ct that diameter.”

In ‘Jewelry CAD Dream,’ it’s all very simple. If I want the profile to be 3.5 mm wide, I edit the dimension, and it’s done.

And the predefined ring templates, which you can use, adapt, or even create yourself, accelerate the design process even further. The entire workflow is more intuitive, simpler, and clearer. You have complete control over the result, at any time!

Sometimes I design very complex pieces that require a lot of design expertise. If you could open the file later and see every design step again, it would be very valuable for training, but also for yourself. Because often, even six months later, I don’t remember exactly how I did it.

With ‘Jewelry CAD Dream,’ I open the file and see every step. In this way, the history also saves knowledge, and new employees can get up to speed quickly. This is very valuable for companies with multiple CAD designers.
