The best ready made meals I've found

I've tried a few different fresh meal providers before I found Freshly and I couldn't be happier with the meals and the customer service I've received in the past 5 months I've been using them.

Here's a quick breakdown of what I like about them:
- Their online interface is extremely convenient to use and switch meals or even skip your delivery.
- They communicate well and remind you of meal change deadlines well in advance.
- The food itself is the most delicious I've had (and high protein & relatively low carb).
- They have nutritional breakdown of their meals (great for counting calories and macros)
- I've had to contact customer service for some issues and they promptly addressed the issue to a very satisfactory result for me.
- It's good value. Since I don't cook, the meals end up less than what I would pay for to-go food.

So far I've tried four meals. The only one that wasn't completely over-seasoned and gross was the turkey chili. Too bad—this was a great concept.

This food NOT Fresh... it is old and the proteins are tough. Seems the sides are COOKED TO DEATH so obviously no nutrients could be left in them... very disappointed. I tried several meals and some had ingredients that were not listed, ie. Instead of brocolli and carrots they changed to cabbage, mushrooms and green beans (no, those do NOT go together well) I contacted customer service but they had nonsense answers... like, oh, that's our new menu... the ingredients listed aren't what are in those meals but they aren't listed anywhere... I think I will let them get the "bugs" (not literally) out before I try them again.

Not worth it

Someone finally did respond to my messages and they are refunding my shipment. I appreciate that they are reasonable in that regard.
First, I'm not the most "green" person but even I thought all the packing materials required to send the meals was not doing the environment any favors. I don't know a way around that, it just really stuck me as wasteful and certainly contributes to the cost. So, I tried to cancel, but somehow it didn't really happen and I got a notice that a shipment was coming my way. (I hadn't gotten the "reminder" email that week.) I contacted customer service and got NO response. So now I have a weeks work of food arriving today that I don't want, need or planned for in my budget. Tried reaching out to customer service a second time and I have still not heard from them. Oh and the food is only OK in my opinion.

I got a deal for a couple meals free, so figured I'd try it at the $5-6/meal level. Basically all six things I tried were just not good. They clearly didn't think of things that would reheat well, as it was all meat that dried out or was incredibly tough (they needed to pre-cook the steak much rarer, and have the chicken in a sauce that would have kept it moist). Plus on some meals it seemed like it just wasn't prepared right (like carrots that were clearly not peeled, which is a really poor way to prepare carrots). I'm not sure where they found their chefs, but they clearly didn't put much thought into how the meals would reheat. I wouldn't buy them again even at the cheap price I paid, I can't imagine paying the full price. There are many better meal ingredient or prepared meal delivery services out there.

Food is just not good.

I was able to try Freshly with my choice of 12 meals at half price through a Groupon deal. Their menu is a little small and unlike some other meal-delivery plans, they only rotate the menu once per month (rather than weekly). Still, at $6 per plate, it didn't seem like a bad deal... I was wrong. The quality of the meals I received was very, very poor. In addition to not being very flavorful, the meat dishes clearly incorporated Grade D meat. The steak was so tough, gristly, and chewy that I just couldn't eat it. The side dishes were hit and miss - the mashed cauliflower was absolutely awful while the cauliflower au gratin was actually quite good. The pork was not good at all. The chicken was slightly overcooked but still edible.
Perhaps most importantly, the 12 meals arrived on Wednesday evening as scheduled but had an expiration date of Saturday. Since these were all dinner portions for me and my partner, there simply wasn't enough time to eat them before that date. And since this is supposed to be a weekly plan, we expected the food to last one week. There was nothing on the website to indicate that the meals have such a short shelf life.
The process of getting my account set up and placing my first order was very easy. It was also very simple to go back and suspend a delivery or cancel your subscription plan (which I did, immediately). At $10-12 per plate, I would really expect higher quality food. This is a business that has a good idea but bad execution.

Thank you so much for your detailed feedback, Holly! Of course, I'm sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with your order.

A few positive updates we have made, regarding the issues you mentioned, are that we now update the overall menu on a weekly basis (rotating one item each week), and we also changed meat vendors after receiving various other reports similar to yours. The quality is much improved!

The date on the labels can be a little confusing/misleading. We do test our meals to have a refrigerated shelf life of a full 7 days from delivery--that is when they will begin to spoil. The date on the labels is the "best by" date, simply indicating when the meals will be their absolute freshest (and is about 3-5 days from delivery). We used to have the true expiration date on the packages, but when we introduced fish dishes we thought it best to change it to the "best by" date, since fish can start to taste less fresh more quickly than other items. It's still perfectly safe after the best by date.:-)

I'm going to private message you with a coupon code momentarily--I would love for you to try the service again to see if you find that it has indeed improved overall.:-)

I weight lift 4 times a week and was hoping Freshly could provide clean post-workout meals to make sure I meet my protein and calorie needs. I was very disappointed.

Freshly covers their meat and vegetables in extremely thick sauces and marinades. Everything tastes "heavy". Which is sad because the chicken is of high quality and would be great without the sauce. I actually rinsed it in the sink and ate it plain :/ As someone who generally only eats store-bought ingredients with minimal sauces, almost all of the Freshly Meals were not for me. It reminds me of Fresh and Easy... which I used to love but after eating extremely clean, now tastes like sodium and sugar to me. Freshly meals would probably taste great to someone who generally already eats unhealthy.

The steak had potential but had an unacceptable amount of fat. Ended up giving 1/3 of it to my dog. I will say that the BLT omelette was good, probably because... What sauce or marinade can you put on an omelette? Maybe look for Freahly meals in that nature if you are going to try it.

Freshly is disgusting

My boyfriend and I bought a 12-meal week using groupon so it was only about $5 a meal instead of $11 a meal. It was not worth it for $5 each. Everything we ordered was disgusting. In particular, I ordered chicken parmesan and thought that they must have given us something else because it was not recognizable as chicken parmesan. I wish I could upload a photo of it here. I could have made something more healthy that didn't taste horrible in less than 2 minutes, or gone to McDonalds and eaten something that was more obviously food than this was. Also, it upset both of our stomachs and gave one of us heartburn.

We have since removed the chicken parm. Dish and revamped it for the improved "Chicken Parmagiana" dish which consists of whole chicken breast, rather than the ground chicken breast that was in the chicken parmesan meal.

Did you reach out to customer support regarding this? If not I would be more than happy to do what I can to resolve this for you, considering the dish upset your stomachs in such a way.

Not a fan

UPDATE: I was contacted about both my experience, and the missing order and they were prompt in refunding our money for the late/spoiled order. The customer service is great, but I went ahead and cancelled my order because I just couldn't find more than two dishes that I - kinda - liked.

This is only my second week on the program, but it may be my last week. So far I've had to change my entire menu, because the food was not very good. The beef tasted terrible - and for the food to supposedly be very high quality and fresh, the beef was chewy, tasted sour and didn't seem to pair well with the other things it was with.

Our deliveries went missing to no response from them, and they have no social media presence or method of contact other than phone or email.

For what I'm spending on it, I expect it to taste better, but I'm disappointed so far, and if it's not better with the new stuff I'm canceling.

We started with Freshly since we were referred by great friends for the excellent meals and portion control. First of all, the company gives you options like to suspend your subscription for a week and discount coupons. Well, the suspend your subscription for a week doesn't work well - I did this and the company shipped an order anyway - while I was out of town so there was rotten food outside my door when we arrived back from vacation. I called Freshly and they said they could see my order was cancelled but shipped anyway. Next, the choice of meals is very limited and most people would like delivery on Monday's. Well, Freshly cannot do this for Northern California yet so we have to get Wed, Thu or Friday deliveries. I have had to call this company every week - getting some meals where the chicken is so dry it will choke your or turkey meatballs that were grilled way too long - and they were black charcoal. There seems to be quite a problem with Product quality and I honestly cannot recommend this company at this time.

Almost all the meals taste pretty gross, rubbery and greasy, especially all the dishes with beef. Most of the pieces I got were very fatty so I fed them to my dog. Their website states "Lose 5-10 lbs in your first week" but I don't see how when every time I take a bite I have grease all over my lips. Maybe I picked the wrong food but I am not going to order again to try.

The entries are decent, good portions, well prepared. But they need to work on the sides. They should keep them simple. Don't over season and don't combine a ton of stuff. Sweet potatoes are just fine on their own and don't need a bunch of cinnamon and cardamom or nutmeg. Give customers the option of picking the sides with the entrees because some are clearly better than others and although I liked certain entrees, the sides were so awful, I wouldn't order again. Also... turkey lasagna is a bunch of ground turkey meat flavored with anise seed and a sliver of zucchini... yuck!

Delicious

Naming just one reason I absolutely love our membership with Freshly.com is impossible. They have delivered all around excellence from start to finish! Their product is fresh and delicious, we are well on our way to reaching our fitness goals in just two weeks, the food options are plentiful, their website is easy to navigate, customer service is great, and our meals are always delivered on time! I have been using them for the last few months. I love the food and customer support is amazing. I have had a few meals that I didn't like and mentioned it in an email and they gave me 100% credit no questions asked. I wasn't even looking for a discount. If you are looking for healthy, easy food this is your company.

It was inedible...

I agree 100%! I had 6 meals (and at least 4 of them were different from the ones you listed). The egg dishes were grainy and without flavor. I thought the antipasto would be okay since it didn't need to be heated, but the chicken was dry and without flavor, the salami and peppers were soggy, but at least I was able to eat the cheese chunks. One of the dishes was a Cuban entree--which I received by mistake. I can't even describe it--it was just icky. The bacon cheeseburger was tasteless and sweet potato fries were still hard and had an overpowering seasoning on them.

The only good thing about these meals was that the portions were large, but unfortunately that just meant more to add to the garbage.

A lot of food!

I am surprised at the few reviews that said they were left hungry. I came here to comment that the portions are sometime too big! I enjoy the dinners and lunches, the flavors are good, and they are large enough that I feel no need to snack. The breakfasts though are way to big for me to get through. I could probably do with half an omelet. I thought the flavor was good, and I had ordered mine with out cheese. They are a bit dry, but not bad if you heat them well. I will be curious how much weight I will lose as I feel like I am overeating (I know it depends on my activity level and size). As a reference, I am a 5'5" woman, who definitely needs more activity, especially weekdays. Only four stars because they are kindof expensive (but I'm not sure they could go much cheaper with free shipping and freshly cooked and delivered).

Not good

For the amount you pay and the portions, that alone is enough to start at 3 stars. I am 5'1'' and 110 pounds. I don't need that much to fill me up but after every single one of these meals I am still hungry.

The food is bland, mostly dry, and not much too them. I would be better off just cooking my own food.

Not much flavor

I wanted to like these meals, but after I had eaten a few I just couldn't. Very little seasoning and as a result, very little flavor. Also, they are supposed to be eaten within 5 days, but seemed to go downhill after 2 days. One of the veggie egg items I ordered for breakfast had meat in it, and another cheese when no cheese was ordered. Don't waste your money.

I was so excited to try Freshly, Love the Idea of healthily meals ready to eat really would help on the more hectic days. I received 9 meals and tried my first one today. French onion pepper steak with green beans. The green beans were good nice and crunchy. But the meat, some off the slices had a bad dirt flavor. I was not impressed hope the rest of the meals are an improvement. I had a coupon code, so I thought it was worth a try. But had I paid full price I would be very disappointed, meals are roughly 10.00 each. Floor that price not at all impressed. Already Canceled!

I've tried eating Lean Cuisine and Nutrisystem, and both tasted like gritty oatmeal to me... gross textures and no real flavor. Freshly is completely different; the meats are always tender and fresh, and the vegetables are delicious and well-seasoned. It's easy to keep up with a low-carb, healthy diet with these meals... they last well and the deliveries are reliable. I love it; it's fairly simple food, but it's filling, and I find myself actually fairly excited to try a new meal each each day. With Freshly I can avoid that awful 'oh-god-it's-dinner-I-have-to-eat-that-gross-crap' feeling and instead just have an easy, quick dinner that is healthy. I would highly recommend this; it's pricing is very reasonable, the food is great, and if you're busy, this is the perfect option for you.
