Mercari Reviews Summary

Mercari's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, primarily due to issues with product descriptions, return policies, and inadequate customer support. Many users report receiving items that do not match their descriptions or arrive damaged, with little recourse for refunds. Complaints highlight a lack of effective communication from both sellers and the platform itself, leading to feelings of frustration and mistrust. While some customers appreciate the streamlined buying and selling process, the overwhelming sentiment indicates that unresolved issues and high fees overshadow any positive experiences, suggesting a need for improved customer service and clearer policies.

Horrible! Horrible!
July 27, 2016

Ordered new makeup. Received used makeup. Took over 24 hours for them to respond to emails. Finally threatened to dispute charge. Then they sent me a return label but gave me 3 days to get in mail (over weekend and I was out of town). I sent it anyway. We'll see if they send me my credit. Hate this company!

This app is by fsr the worst app for sellers and buyers. I appreciated the fact that there were no hidden fees. Sellers get 100% of the money. However, too many issues with selling or buying and ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE AVAILABLE. One might check the Better Business Bureau as not a single positive review exists. I sold a $300 iPad to someone and once I shipped it, I realized it was a generation 2 instead of a generation 3 as advertised. She wanted to return it which was not a problem because it was my fault. Mercari took over 2 weeks to allow us to return the item. In the meantime her money was held up and I was worried that she would send the incorrect item back. Once we were permitted to return the item the lady provided tracking and I received a box in the mail. As soon as confirmation went to Mercari that my item was delivered they released her funds back to her. Luckily, my iPad was in the box but she could have sent a pair of underwear and Mercari would have released the money back to her. My latest issue with them is that a seller offered to send more pictures of her item to prove authenticity. I asked her if she could post more pictures on Mercari and she told me that she would email me pics. As soon as I entered my email Mercari bans me for one month. That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. They said they are reviewing the reason I would insert my email. I told them that would take 10 seconds if they read our conversation but I have gotten no response. Why would I do a transaction outside of there business when there's no fees on either end for the seller or the buyer? They are STEEEEWPID not stupid. I keep getting automated responses from Jazzy Jeff, Holly Hobbit, and Little Bill. All of the automated messages have a ridiculous first and last name. The customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. This is probably because there is none. I am not sure how this app continues to stay in business when there is about 90% negative reviews compared to the positive. Worst app EVER

Hot garbage
July 15, 2016

Absolutely trash app. It is so complicated to navigate and mostly everything on it was junk. Luckily/Unluckily I found a leather jacket that had been advertised on another site. It looked nice and is by favorite brand. When I received it, the jacket smelled like old chemicals. I contacted the customer service and they said if I could send pictures of the damage then they would accept my return. I explained that it was a smell, not a physical issue and they refused to take the return. $150 wasted and horrible customer service to boot. Never again.

Wow. What a scam!
June 7, 2016

There will never be enough room on any website for me too have room for all the words I want to say to rant about this ridiculous scam of an online Marketplace. There is absolutely no existence of customer service, there are a lot of people that scam on this website, it's very difficult to get a complaint resolved and worst of all at a whim if they decide to review your account have the right to delete your account which makes all of your posts listings and money inaccessible. The bad part is if you accidentally use certain words their computer system spits out a warning, after a certain number of warnings you are automatically deleted and or a review of your account will lead to having your account deleted. There is no room for innocent mistakes and you can end up losing money that you have sold products for because you won't have access to your account. Do not use the site. There is a reason why it sounds too good to be true. No they don't keep a portion of your money the way Poshmark does but there is a reason why Poshmark is legitimate and has good ratings compared to this absurd joke of a marketplace. One person that I know had her account deleted because she listed a box of Keurig K-Cups. I myself had my account deleted because I use the word inspired in reference to a $5 pair of earrings I was trying to sell. They are cheap inexpensive costume jewelry type earrings and I listed them for $5. God forbid, I said that they were Chanel inspired. Apparently the word inspired is a mortal sin. Instead of deleting the listing or telling me that that was against the rules they deleted my account and have prohibited me from using this site at all. I give this Marketplace less than a year before it shuts down... it's like my grandmother used to say if you don't start you don't have to stop. So don't start. Use reputable online Marketplace sites. It's websites like this that help a person decide for and discriminate which ones are worth trying to sell something online.

At first I loved this app. But then, after I had just sent out three shipments, they flagged my next post as "counterfeit" and said they were terminating my account. The only way to get paid would be to give them my bank account information for "direct deposit". Um, no! And they never gave a specific reason for considering my products as fakes. They had "warned" me previously on other items due to other users flagging them... But didn't give a reason. This is a scam to get your bank account number or to steal your items as they hold your money in escrow. If they terminate your account then they get to keep the cash. So I'm out three authentic designer items worth hundreds and never could get more than a generic automated response.

This is site has unfair practice. The site has automated responses and does not resolve any issues. The site deletes listing stating the listing is stock photos (they must think I am a supermodel) when you email with facts about any issues the responses are all automated. They suspend your account for no reason often. So if you basically want headaches and to be harassed by the site by unfair claims and awful automated costumer service. Sign up for this app. They also keep your money for a long period of time before depositing in your bank account. I understand this is how they make profit from earning interest off of our money, but come on at least have real live people in customer service... Worst experience ever! BEWARE...

HORRIBLE!
March 31, 2016

Horrible customer service You have to wait forever for their response! But they will delete your item without any reason and they do that very fast. And will block you for 12 hours because of nothing. Also it's almost not possible to return an item or your money back. They worked better when they started. But now it's just horrible.

I used Mercari after using Poshmark. I was thrilled at first due to the $0 commission that Mercari asks for, and the shipping has many different options. I was thrilled, that is, until I realized how absolutely abysmal the customer service is.

I had a really awful experience with a seller. She was abrasive, standoffish, and clearly just there to scam people and make money. She gave one word answers to everything asked about her merchandise, and gave a bad name to people trying to make an honest dollar and sell their old or unused clothing. I bought from her a pair of pants, and I paid $20+shipping for these pants. She advertised 1-2 day shipping, proof of shipment, and that the product would be in mint condition.

3 weeks later my pants arrived, with a ton of pilling, a huge hole, and a missing drawstring. They were absolutely disgusting! They reeked of smoke and were worth about $5 on a good day. I contacted Mercari asking for a refund or a return, and they told me it was too late! That if I wanted a refund I wasn't allowed to rate my seller. Well, I did rate my seller and it was too late for me to take it back, however I clearly didn't understand that and I would never have done so had I known how awful these pants would be! Mercari doesn't give 2 sh*ts about customer satisfaction, something I've learned the hard way. I paid almost $30 on a pair of busted pants, and I will never use Mercari again.

BUYER BEWARE! I urge anyone and everyone to stay off of MercariApp.

I like them
March 10, 2016

After being on Poshmark you would appreciate Mercari. I love that you have options with shipping and that there's no commission fee currently. I also like that you can leave feedback or send a dispute straight to support. For myself I have had a decent costumer service experience may twice. Twice they refunded me although one time an item I bought was against their rules (didn't know). That was awesome of them. I also like how you can message a buy or seller once you made a purchase. I would recommend them but I do not recommend buy or selling anything expensive on these apps because I'm sure no company wants to refund that much money although they should. I personally chose to stay away from buying/selling anything too expensive. Luckily for me I have had mostly great experiences and just a few bad out of about 20 purchases and only 5 sells. Simple app I like it. Hope it will add a feature where you could use emojis that's one thing I did like about Poshmark.

I've received all my items that I've bought and they didn't rip me off. Some items take slower to ship than others because of the shipping company or who you buy from. You just have to check the ratings of the seller and check to make sure there are no flaws or you might get ripped off

Customer service = an automated, generic computerized response to all/any complaints/issues you send in. It took them OVER 6 MONTHS to finally refund me for a counterfeit item! AND THATS ONLY BC I CONTACTED THE BBB! They have no phone #, won't give you their address or email, and are operated by computers- no humans are on the other end of their "support team!" They also allow their robots to delete listings as they please and freeze accounts in a random basis. I've lost credits and sales due to their corner-cutting practices. Stay away u less like to lose both money, time and patience...:-(( TWO BIG THUMBS DOWN!

Slow sales!
October 6, 2015

I've only sold a handful of items at Mercari but at snail pace. I guess the only appealing thing is they don't take any commissions but I don't there's enough foot traffic on this app. I've tried sharing my Mercari listings via other social media but hasn't gained much attention either. You can pretty much sell anything on Mercari, which is almost like eBay minus the auction feature. At one point, I got really annoyed at them when they decided to use FedEx only as their ship carrier. But I guess do to complaints, they now have both USPS and FedEx shipping options. It's a pretty easy app to use but it just doesn't get enough attention.

Mercari is a place where you can buy and sell things from other people like you. I'm assuming this is a Japanese venture because the site can be set to "United States" and "Japan" but you won't find a link to their support system. Support seems to be available in app only.

For buyers: When you find a product you like, you can buy it, assuming that the seller still has the item and the app on their phone and is paying attention. Usually after a certain amount of time if the seller hasn't shipped on contacted the buyer through the app, the transaction can be cancelled at the request of the buyer.

For sellers: You can choose up to four photos and edit them in the app. You need to add a title and description, as well as choose the shipping fee, condition the item is in, size (if applicable, and price. Whole dollars only, no change.

You get $2 for yourself and a the person you refer to Mercari (if you want to use mine it's jld475, just saying).

Once you receive the item you ordered you will have to rate your seller, and sellers will have to rate the buyers. If you are not satisfied with your order when it arrives you can figure out what to do by contacting Mercari and/or the seller. Do not, under any circumstance rate the other person if you are unsatisfied with your purchase because there's nothing that you'll be able to do to get your money back if you do that.

Payment methods: Paypal, and card. You can have funds sent to your bank through the app.

Shipping methods: Labels are offered for USPS and FedEx. Mercari recommends using USPS for everyday things and FedEx for fragile things. The shipping rates are: 0-0.5 lbs = $4,0.5 - 3 lbs = $6,3 - 10 lbs = $9, and 10 - 20 lbs = $15. You can also choose to ship the item yourself.

I hope this is helpful. I have had a pretty positive experience using the service for several months now. I've had two negative experiences but one of them had deleted the app so they never knew I had purchased anything and another lady failed to disclose to me that the eye shadow palette I had bought from her (which she said was "no brand") was actually a knock off of something else. I did report the account.

Use at your own risk
January 6, 2015

Use at your own risk. There's far too many complaints of rip offs from sellers and even Mercari. They're out of Japan so most people have very little recourse options. Read the reviews. They stay in business because they're banning people and keeping the money they have in their accounts.
