My roomie moved in today. He's career navy and was on a humanitarian mission in a tiny island nation north of Australia - sleeping in a converted storage container. He found my ad and for the last couple of months, we kept in touch. He's as nice and friendly as I expected. Thank You to Roommate.com. I've now posted my larger bedroom on here.
5 days and not a single request. Except of course for the constant upgrade pitch. I contacted them and have had no response. Obviously they only want the monthly fee. Stay away.
I have actually had better luck with craigslist and that place is full of scammers but at least, they occasionally have a response that is a real person who is actually looking for a room in my city and at least CL is free. I had one person from roommate.com contact me saying that they were interested in the room but they asked for more "verification" (Roommates.com has different levels of verification) I had to pay $2.99 to roommates.com to TRY to verify my ID and roommates.com rejected my verification and then asked for my social security number as an alternate way to "verify" my identity?! WTF! Worst case, they (or some hackers?) are trying to steal my identity. Best case (?), the roommates.com website sucks and it now looks like I failed verification? Either way, I have had several "matches" say that they refuse to pay the cost to read my post and so, it is is total waste of time to try to communicate. Now, I feel that my security/privacy/identity could be vulnerable to theft. This is an awful "service"... what a waste of almost $30 for two months and what a stressful thing to worry about now that I put my personal information at risk by trying to "verify" with roommates.com. Grrrrrr. I felt like they were legitimate but now, I think I made a huge mistake. It sure seems like a SCAM to me. (UPDATE: They did refund my money after I reported the problem to my bank and asked them for a refund. They insisted that they are not a scam and paid the refund, in full.) Still, what's up with charging people to "verify" their ID? And please stop saying that the service is free if communication can't be accessed without paying. It is more honest to say UPFRONT that you can post a profile for free and pay to access matches, if you decide to use the service.

Man thats frustrating... let me walk you through what your experience will be like offering a room:
You enter all your information, data that they mine on you, your home, your pictures, your location, your hobbies, your interests, your gender, your preferences, etc. Then you reach out to people, and when someone responds, you have to PAY to see the response, and guess what... it could be a "no thanks."
They refer to it as Upgrading to VIP to see messages, but free to do mostly everything else up till that point... real bait-and-switch there in my opinion. Now I'm out a couple bucks, and some bastards Zuckerberg'd me for my private information. Stay away from this site unless you have a nice place, in a large city with lots of demand. Awesome website, clean. Stellar customer service! Easy to use site. Good prices. Website functions perfect. No issues at all. I always use their services if I need a roommate or am looking for a place to rent.
I paid from $20-$30 least 4 times, and to say the least, I don't have very good experience with this. I feel they some how discriminate and so that you will not reach others. I will write more on this another time. But really, my experience with this for more than a year doesn't allow me to recommend it.

Roommates.com is a bulletin board service that matches you with other members according to the preferences that you pick for your profile which you can adjust at anytime. You also have the option to send free messages to anyone on the site if you would like. Once you start receiving replies to your messages we do require that you pay for a membership to open and read your messages, but you do have the option to include your contact information in your free sent messages so only one of you has to upgrade.

I have used roommate. Com for several years. It is a little more expensive then other sites but in the scheme of renting, it is not ridiculous. I have sent many messages that have gone unanswered. I assume the receiver did not want to pay to get the message. I feel like if they will not pay to receive messages one they're not very serious about finding a place to live and two if they won't pay $15 to help themselves find a place will they pay the rent repeatedly on time. I have been successful using this site. I do wish it had a cheaper annual fee that you could use instead of the shorter more expensive ones.
They have people sending fake messages just so that you subscribe then they wait until your suscription is over to send a message so that you have to keep paying to see the messages.
Pretty much just a scam site, stay away.

I just wanted to write this review to express my frustrations with this website. I paid to receive my first message (which I thought was odd) and that turned out to be a "fake person".
The next 3-4 messages I received were either deleted because they were inappropriate or "they couldn't find the message". Seriously if this company is going to make people pay to receive messages, they should invest more time in assisting people find decent roommates. Waste of time and money. Better off using Facebook than this site to find roommates. Seems like they ONLY care about making money.

If you are looking to rent a room, stay away from the address above. The Owners mother lives in the house and is a control freak. There were 5 women that lived in the house and the mother tried to control our lives, from what we did to what we are allowed to eat in the house. She constantly asked where we were going, what time we were going to be back and if you refuse to do anything she asks of you, you will be evicted. This happen to me and two of the other girls that lived there. BE WARE! Don't let this happen to you.

Joined as a VIP out of desperation, only to receive responses from idiots who felt the need to cuss me out and call me "ugly as whore" completely unprovoked. I reported them and zero action was taken. "Matches" and "search results" always include numerous people NOT EVEN LOOKING IN THE AREA OF MY LISTING! Unfortunately, sometimes people are not on their best behavior when they are sending messages online. So we make it easy to report them or not have to interact with them anymore. There is an option to block members on the left side of your messages to keep them from contacting you.
We do program some "cushion" into our algorithms to allow profiles to be matched who we think might still be a great match overall, but might not necessarily match all preferences precisely.
Members who need a room can specify up to 3 city/state locations, with a surrounding radius around each one. As long as your home falls within one of the radiuses the member has selected they can appear as a match. We allow each member the ability to select their own radius based on what they individually feel is appropriate for their needs.

My husband and I had never done anything like this before and saw this site had good reviews so we gave it a try.
At first they seemed good. We got a few calls, one or two people came out to see the room. But the longer we were on, the less action we got. I also noticed I was seeing the same people looking for a room for months at a time.
The kicker for me is that in the last 6 weeks I noticed people being removed from my matches only to come back on a few days later as a match.
I am currently working with a realtor at full price to rent my room. We had no choice, this sight just did not work.

I've used the site in the past and it worked well. This time, they took my money, sent me one email with matches and will not even let me sign in. I've been trying to cancel and I can't. I finally sent an email to email that sent the matches, and I haven't heard back. I'm going to have to report them as fraudulent. This is too bad because they were a decent site in the past.

I've used Roommates.com 3-5 times in past years and up until now (2019) it was fine. But they've changed it and severely watered down the search criteria. Aside from what I say in my profile, if I simply want to conduct a search on my own, I cannot narrow it down to "female" for example nor can I narrow it down to a particular dollar amount for the rent or a particular age range. If I'd known about these changes, I never would have spent the $20 this time. Also, when I play the role of someone looking for a room (I am offering a room) and do a search that SHOULD turn up my posting, it does not show up!
