Pat's work is nothing short of incredible. The results stand for themselves and cannot be denied. What I think leads to his work being so good is that he truly cares about the process and the results. He worked with me on what I wanted and discussed many details before committing to a plan. My guitar came out BETTER than I expected. You can tell he has passion for seeing your dream realized by his hands. Don't hesitate to entrust your axe with him, you cannot be disappointed.
All good things come to those that wait, and sometimes that just makes it sweeter. Took just a little bit longer than planned but I got my old pal 1989 Ibanez 540SLTD body back from Patrick today restored to its original Desert (neon) Yellow and all I can say is WOW. I was worried no one would really do the proper DY color on this, especially after many years of my Sharpie scribbling and spray painting over it... ruining it basically. Sent it to Patrick and held my breath; he hunted me down online (after I'd switched all my contact info without him knowing) and contacted me last week. Unboxing it today was a revelation. The color is incredible, the PERFECT Desert Yellow, super saturated and clean, the lacquer shine is like glass, perfectly smooth, super reflective. Might be nostalgia talking but I swear it looks better than it did at Sam Ash in 1989. Today is a good day: thanks Patrick!
I have nothing but good things to say about Sims Custom Shop! Not only does my guitar look absolutely incredible, but Patrick was so helpful and easy to deal with. Great communication (never any issues getting pictures, updates, or feedback on idea I had), guitar was finished in a timely fashion, and he was always in touch. I especially appreciated how thoughtful he was about all the details, making great suggestions and talking through any decisions with me. This paint job is exactly what I wanted, and I would highly recommend Sims Custom Shop to anyone and everyone. Couldn't be happier!
After almost 3 yrs I finally got my guitar back. Pat gave me a call and explained everything to me and also his solution to his problem. After being on the phone for a while I was satisfied with his explanation. I can never fault him with his work as he does amazing work. His Isaura was time management and customer service which he both addressed and gave solutions. I am satisfied with the work
Someone contacted me when I sent another follow up and said they just started working with sims and is replying to e-mails, this is the follow up e-mail I got.
I checked on it for you today. They have the body painted & clear coated, but needs to be sanded, buffed and polished. The headstock has been painted and the logo applied, but needs to be clear coated.
That was a month ago, been following up since then and still no news. Really bad customer service and still no guitar.
Excellent work, Very professional extremely pleased with how the guitar turned out. The finish work is flawless and following all of my special directions.
Patrick killed this repair and repaint for me, this guitar was my mentors who passed away last year and I wanted to fix it up and gig it out so I would always have a piece of him with me. Even with all the difficulties getting supplies in right now (yes it really is that bad) he was able to get this done and kept me in the loop the whole time
I commissioned Patrick Sims to refinish a 1989 Ibanez RG 760 in a very unique color. Ibanez used a finish in 1989 that they called "dark gray." In all actuality it's really a cross between copper and gray. Mr. Sims was able to match the color to perfection bringing the guitar back to its former glory. I am incredibly impressed with the quality of the work and I would recommend Mr. Sims to anyone who is looking for next level custom work!
Back in the fall of 2020, I found a crazy airbrushed Kramer Baretta for sale on Reverb for way too much money. I just loved the paint job and figured I could go on the hunt for a cheaper Baretta style guitar with a banana headstock and find someone to refinish it. I found Sims Custom Shop via Google, sent Pat a message and he said he could do it no problem. About a year later, I finally found a reasonably priced Kramer with all the right hardware in Russia. It arrived a month later and I sent the body over to Pat for refinishing.
Here are the pictures of the final product. Pat exceeded my expectations and put immense care into making this the most incredible paint job I've ever seen on a guitar. It even blows the original we went off of out of the water. I mailed the guitar to Pat in October 2021 and received it this June. Thanks so much Pat & Sims Custom Shop for everything. I highly recommend his work for whatever wild ideas you have. He's the best out there. Rock on.
We all know the truth that Pat Sims is fabulous at what he does. However, the horrifying customer service experience I've endured over the past 8 months is not worth the trouble by any means. I kick myself for not finding these sites before I paid for my requested job IN FULL in October 2021. I recognize that the job I asked from Pat was difficult, but his radio silence and awful customer service is completely exhausting. The time spent with this ordeal hanging over my head is simply not worth it. I've opened up a dispute with my credit card provider. He has left me no choice if I ever hope to see this work done in a respectful time frame! Next I'll be contacting his local sheriff department to get the body returned if the work isn't completed. Again I will happily pay for the completed work, I just want simple communication and respect!
Right from the beginning, Patrick was very thorough and professional, detailing each step of the process of turning my Hamer Blitz bass into one of my bucket list replica basses. Although, more time was needed - no thanks to the pandemic - when the bass was completed, Patrick let me know immediately through a phone call that the job was completed, and pictures were on the way for me to see. I was absolutely thrilled with the way that it turned out, and it even has the approval of someone very close to Mikey himself!
Have a 1972 P Bass that I got when I was 18 years old. I am now 66 and the body has been thru alot of upgrades and had been stripped as well. Really in bad shape. Sent it to Sims and in about 16 weeks I could not believe it was the same bass. Commination was 100 percent thru Messenger & phone. I read some negative reviews on line about the time frame of the work but I never experienced any of that. The work was just amazing and I can not sat enough about the quality of work.
I met Patrick over the phone about 7 months ago or so and on the basis of one call I sent him three guitar bodies to refinish. The colors for two of them were classic colors from the '50s and they are beautiful. He took a lot of care keep the wiring routes unobstructed and clean, which is huge. The colors are magnificent and the care that he took to not only finish them but hold on to them until the weather was warm and calm enough that he could ship them with no fear of checking or getting lost. I won't hesitate in the future to send more projects to him as they come up. Great to deal with, worth waiting for and very satisfying.
I sent Pat this 1990 Horrible Pink American Standard Telecaster Body I purchased on E-Bay to Pat for restoration. Pat did a fantastic Job. The Body was very ruff. I think someone had attempted to Relic It but all they did was mess it up. I am very pleased with the awesome job Pat and his staff did to bring this American Classic back to life. I highly Recommend them for all of your guitar refinish needs!
I talked to Patrick the beginning of April 2021. He was awesome to work with, even calling me on the weekend to go over all the details of my build. He pulled photos of two different paint colors I was looking at to show me real world applications. I ended up going with a tri coat Lamborghini Aventador Viola Parsifae Pearl (really pretty purple). I was more than comfortable sending my Warmoth build to him for paint. It turned out awesomely. I was originally quoted 13 weeks to get the guitar back, but it was closer to 20 before it returned to me. The quality is awesome and I'm quite happy.
As many have stated, the quality of work is not an issue, but as many have stated, the customer service, communication, misdirection, lies, and turnaround time is absolutely an issue. I had to open a formal complaint with PayPal to reverse payment which is the only thing that motivated him to contact me - and when he did reach out, he was ridiculously contentious, and unprofessional.
I will NEVER work with this shop again. Buyer beware, you've been warned! The BBB should shut this shop down.
The one word I can use to describe Sims Custom Shop is "Amazing"! I wanted to refinish my Charvel So Cal and Charvel San Dimas satin black and wanted the best to do it. After interviewing several people, I went with Pat. Pat was the most knowledgeable, honest and professional. Pat was personable and called me to update me every step of the way. When I received my guitars, they were beyond my expectations. I have included a couple of pics, Pat's work speak for themselves. Thank you Pat, you are awesome!
As a customer that has done business with Pat, I'd like to review Pat's business from two dimensions... Quality of work, and customer responsiveness. Had this review been solely about one or the other, the ratings would be drastically different. But as for quality of work? Pat's work on my instrument was absolutely flawless. I could see the outcome of an artisan that fusses over every aspect of a project in order to turn out a guitar that surpasses his customer's expectation... But that may account for the other dimension of Pat's business: The customer responsiveness. My Music Man Sting Ray bass repaint project was quoted as taking an estimated 14 weeks to finish, when in reality I waited nine months to receive it. What I found most objectionable about this was either non-responsiveness to my follow-ups on progress, or what seemed to be more than one make-believe commitment that it would be going out but never did. Pat ultimately did ship it back to me when it met his quality standard. My take on Pat is that he is a very talented guy who doesn't charge enough for his excellent work, so he takes in as much business as he can, and most likely aware that he is unable to ship work out as fast as work comes in. I'd love to see him do something about this, and for him to understand that a guitar is a precious, personal thing, and people soon develop anxiety that they are never going to see their instrument again, and that they have been ripped off. I do not believe Pat is a dishonest man. I believe he is a superb craftsman that cannot keep up with the demand his business model requires. So... My separate rating for Pat is as follows... Quality - 5 Stars. Customer responsiveness - 1 Star. I would recommend Pat to a potential customer only after making sure they were aware that the project could take months longer than expected.
This paint job is better than any bass I've bought brand new! Great pricing, great customer service, I will definitely be getting more instruments refinished through Sims in the future.
I had a 1981 Gibson Les Paul Custom refinished and Sim's Custom Painting done an amazing job and was on time. Perfect finish and top quality detailing! Sim's is the only guitar refinishing business I'll ever deal with from now on and I HIGHLY recommend them. Very professional and a great personality!
5 out 5 stars!
Contacted him in June of 2020 paid him $400+ dollars for a refinish of a guitar body that was supposed to take 10 weeks. About 12 weeks in September 2020, I followed up, only to get a reply it was a going to be a few more weeks. That was the last reply I received from him until April of 2021. I left this initial bad review here along with a BBB complaint in March of 2021. About a month after that I received an email stating the work was completed and would be shipping back to me. The finish job was great, and I'm happy with the finished project. If he had responded to my emails and actually completed the job in a reasonable amount of time I would certainly recommend him. He has awful customer service so as long as you accept that up front, you might be okay. There are plenty of better options out there so I'd still avoid this guy when I'm looking to have this kind of work done again.
Oddly enough, he does actually send me emails and even texts now, specifically about this negative review, wanting me to update it which I did. Everything I stated above is correct, and I'm not saying he ripped me off, just that it was an awful experience and his customer service is very bad and I refuse to erase that fact from history now that he seems to have remorse for being such a bad businessman.
Answer: Two years now he's had my guitar and my money. When he did bother to respond to me, he lied. No he doesn't respond. Total scam.
Answer: I just filed a complaint against him with the College Station Tennessee police department. They are processing it now. I would suggest doing the same.
Answer: Did you ever get your guitar back? I've been waiting since Jan 2015.
