Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake. I put all my information into this damn site and it says, "calculating return", it scrolls aimlessly and then states I need to, "log back in?" (So where exactly is my information going to?) From a computer programming standpoint - it's absolutely terrible. The site is not communicating well and yes I have cleared my browser history and downgraded my security wall etc... I wrote my concerns to customer service via email and the response I received was, "It should work now"... Seriously... well IT DOESN'T. Please, do yourself a favor and find a different way to file your taxes. This site is so bad I am questioning if its even legit. I used it last year and things were great. But, never, ever again. Scary stuff folks.
Will short you $1,000's because wont give you Earned Income Credit based on 2019 Income. Normally ok program but they missed this vital exception to the EIC in 2021 return.
Logged in to do my 2021 taxes. You can imagine my surprise when I went to file them, and the quoted almost $70 for filing fees! I was doing the "classic" 1040 only with no extra forms and standard deduction. Without a doubt, the most expensive online tax prep company on the internet. I can't believe anyone would pay for this! I instead used Tax Hawk, and it only cost me $14.99 total for filing both federal and state. It's time for overpriced Taxslayer to go the way of Myspace and the Dodo bird.
Avoid avoid! Taxslayer platform is chock full of bugs! First year I've tried using it and it is literally ONE OF THE WORST apps of anykind that I've ever encountered. Other complaints note hidden costs applied with the service but I didn't get that far, after 2 hours of trying to get the app to download my return and getting "please log in" and constant error messages I gave up and I'm using a different service. I wouldn't touch Taxslayer with a 10ft pole.
This company is heartless and they are happy to take advantage and exploit the poor, much like any dictator. My son made less then $7K last year and because he is living in poverty he qualifies for the Earned Income Credit. TaxSlayer brags about being free but then wants to charge $18 for filling our form 8962 that qualifies my son for this credit. So, if you are poor and living in poverty and are provided the opportunity to receive assistance from the government via the EIC, TaxSlayer still wants to gut you for what can be up to 2 hours of salary because they assisted with a simply form. This may not be illegal but it certainly is an example of a company that is taking advantage of the disadvantaged. Their CEO, Brian Rhodes, should be ashamed of himself for allowing his company to exploit the poor, but then again maybe it is all this gouging that allows them to pay for all of its sports sponsorships, such as the TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, NASCAR and three PGA Tour golfers.
Finished my federal form, but just as I'm starting state form it said "Oops, there was an error...", and since the "Try Again" button did nothing my only other option was the "Exit State Return" button which then then caused it to immediately say "Congratulations, your state form is done!". So then I hit "Continue" and it tells me it can't file the state form because of verification errors. And guess what? There's no actual way to access this mythical state form that magically has been both completed and not completed. At this point I was in an endless loop, unable to do anything expect repeat the above steps. That's when I bailed. See screenshots.
What A joke, this software sucks and incorrectly calculates your return, especially MAINE, it does not allow you to reach forms or include your home taxes that maine rebates, they suck and are confusing with badly written pages, for navigation, can not go back in multiple places... UGGGGG and fed tax, does not compute many situations that regular filling software do, and this should!
So this service is not helpful at all... I have used it for several years and every time I think I have the problem solved something else pops up... first it was a letter from the IRS telling me I hadn't paid school taxes since 2015... I put all the information into my return for taxslayer. I definitely paid them. So I call and file the individual returns. For 2015 2018 and 2019 (conveniently the only years I used tax slayer were the years that were missing. So I filed and I paid the fines for having done every thing late. Then when I went to file this year I paid for the premium service spent hours on the phone making sure everything was right and told that they don't file school taxes but there was a voucher included in my return that I just needed to print and mail. So I did that. Cool... THEN a month or two ago a letter saying I haven't filed my city taxes in the last two years... you have got to be kidding me?!? So I go out and file these as well with the IRS and now I am getting a letter that they want me to submit copies of all my w2s and the front page of my returns from the last 3 years... okay well I go to log in to tax slayer to pull the copies of these returns and it says my account is not there. I try forgot user name forgot password and nothing. Then I googled their number and tried calling for log in assistance and they tell me it's after hours and to call back during the buisness hours listed on my account that I can't log into... I looked into my email and found my user name and tried resetting my password but it just says my account is locked or my information doesn't match anything in their system and to try again...
So now I am at risk of audit I am pretty sure because this service doesn't really file everything for you even though they lead you to believe that they do. And I can't access my old returns or call anyone for help. And I am at a total loss and utterly fuming. I have a week to find and submit this information and no where to look for it.
Trash company not worth it. It's cost me 100s in late fees and bull crap because they aren't upfront and they don't do everything. Just pay someone to do it. It's not worth it at this point.
All tax slayer wants is to collect a fee from you. They allow you to file your state and federal forms, tell you that you everything checked out and all you have to do is wait for federal/state confirmation. Both in 2019, 2020 I got confirmation that everything was done correctly and fed/ state accepted my return. Taxslayer wasted no time debiting my bank account for their fee. Shortly after filing ( both years) I got notified by IRS that instead of being issued a refund I would have to pay them between $1100-$1300. This company sucks. I will never use Taxslayer again
Their pricing is deceptive -- and that's being kind. More of a scam. Says you can do a return for free -- yet they start tacking on charges when you get into it. Then their website got jammed up. Couldn't process my return for days. Then I finally file my return. Turns out their dopey software got it wrong. So instead of a nice refund -- I had to pay. What's really funny is whenever you call customer service to ask about a bill -- the first word out of the agent's mouth, without addressing your question, is "you're contractually obligated to pay." That kind of training shouts "scam" in my book. Do not do business with these slimy crooks.
Constant error messages without stating how to fix them. Does not recognize bank info inputted...
The site tells me I need to finish my return which I know damn well was submitted and when I go to 'finish' it, it says I can't because my ss number had already efiled. Seriously... screen shots below. Oh and it says refund of 0 and it is over 2000. Worthless piece of crap software. If you want to sit around and wonder wtf if going on with your return since they give two different messages, then this is the program for you. I will never use this crap again.
Everything worked fine right up to the point of filing my returns- then... nothing. An endless and incredibly frustrating computer loop with no solution, because the website was not functioning properly. I was filing at the last minute, so it's almost a certainty that heavy use of the site played a role in the malfunction. But tax prep software that doesn't work on the day taxes are due? Bush league, I don't care how many people were trying to use the site. Oh, and also, it wasn't just me- twitter was blowing up with desperate people having the exact same issue with the exact same site symptoms. See attachment of social media posts listed on Down Detector from frustrated people and Taxslayer (admitting that their site was down at filing time, and not up again until after 3:00 a.m. one the day after tax day).
The ultimate irony? The site worked fine the day after tax day, and because I didn't want to spend another 3 hours entering my info with another tax prep site, I just continued with Taxslayer. So now they get their money from me and I get a fine from the IRS. Lesson learned- it's anyone but Taxslayer from here on out.
I have been using Tax Slayer for probably 10 years. Even though we were military and had the option to do our taxes for free, we often opted for a paid version. I can now, just this year, only access my last 4 years of returns, even though I have had the same account for YEARS. Why? I paid for them. I USED to be able to access all of them. This year, I found their program to be lacking and it overlooked several errors that Turbo Tax found when I input the same information with them. Not only did the other program find my errors, their program was comprehensive and explained things where TaxSlayer was content to let the mistakes ride, with no explanation. There are so many changes this year with child tax credits and whatnot, and Tax Slayer was a big let down when going through the 'guided' version! Not Happy, I do NOT recommend them anymore! I will be moving whatever returns I still have access to, to another platform.
I was charged $43.50 to file my taxes. This company is not FREE, that is a lie. My brother used another tax company called OLT and he didn't have to pay nothing. Do not use this rip off company.
The first one went through with no problem. But because there idoits closed the accounts that they use so they can get their money before they pass it on to us... they sent them back to the irs. They should be made to pay us directly. H&r block and turbo tax fixed their problems. But NOT TAX SLAYER!
I have been a loyal customer of Tax Slayer for 4 years, but I will never use again. They incorrectly added me and my spouses Social Security and caused us a penalty of $1,790.19... When questioned, the person on the phone had me on hold for ~30 minutes and then told me to call the IRS. She said there was no line 72 on tax form 1040... which is clearly false.
Be smart - DO NOT USE TAX SLAYER
What a mess. The free option is not clearly stated until the end. They want to charge 89.90 for various services. I sighed and agreed as the person I'm doing taxes for ok'd it. They never asked for payment either. And it is slow and clunky this year as someone else mentioned. I've used Credit Karma in the past but they changed companies and I could never get the new site to work. Why on earth do all these tax sites lie to you? Ridiculous fees, etc. I feel like writing to Bernie Sanders about this. It's all a joke. Thanks Congress.
I have used them in the past and it works okay for the most part. As you move up and have more tax clients, it makes sense to find something that more suited for the practice,
This was quick and easy and also fast. Bought for my son as a birthday gift for his friend and his friends parents. I'm pretty sure we just made this boy one happy kid for Saturday night
Answer: I've been using tax slayer for 10 years. This year they really screwed me over
