The overall reputation of Better World Books is mixed, with notable strengths in their extensive selection and competitive pricing, often praised for delivering books in excellent condition. However, significant concerns arise regarding customer service, particularly related to shipping delays, fulfillment errors, and inadequate packaging that often leads to damaged items. Many customers express frustration over the return process and a perceived lack of responsiveness from the company. While some customers remain loyal due to the ethical practices and commitment to literacy, recurring issues with order accuracy and support hinder a consistently positive experience.

We get ALL my kid's assigned reading books from Better World Books and have for YEARS. We've also recommended it to countless parents struggling to pay for school supplies much less the gazillion assigned books because "each child needs their own personal copy". Ugh. Anyhoo, our best advice is ORDER EARLY cause shipping takes a while but you can't beat the prices.
I never know what to expect when my books arrive. Some look brand new and others seem to be well read. Overall the books are in good condition. Where else can you get this kind of bang for your buck?
I was surprised that the order came so quickly. Usually, books take a couple of weeks.
However, you do need stronger boxes and perhaps use smaller boxes. I received a small box (around 12 inches or so) and a bigger box (around 2 feet or so). The bigger box was badly bashed and barely holding together. I'm surprised none of the books fell out.
I've bought hundreds of like new hardback books in the past several years from Better World Books. I've never paid more than $3 per book. And did i say free shipping? And the books are -- in many cases -- new. The spines creak when i open the book, indicating the books have never even been opened. What a bargain!
I have ordered dozens of books for my grandchildren, and almost always had good luck. But, one time I ordered for myself and they sent me a completely different order (probably for someone else) and I was never able to straighten it out because they said I had received a delivery, etc. That was a negative experience that I never was able to get them to correct. Other than that one time, I have had a lot of good experiences and still continue to use them. I like the concept that they are using profits for a good cause.
Love buying books here, particularly when they have a sale. Great value and lots to choose from. Found a book that only came out 3 mos. Ago for a great price.
Don't count on finding absolutely everything here, but there's lots to choose from and service has been great for me.
I always find greatly priced books in excellent condition with them. They are my go to if i can wait a week or so to get my book.
I received my copy of this book on August 7,2017.
Thanks for the quick processing.
I love BWB and constantly tell friends to go there first when they are looking for a specific book!
In good condition. It will be informative and not too long to read, it is also relevant to me which US state the author is from. It arrived on time.
I have ordered over 35 books through BWB. I'm aware of the way their shipping was handled, so I never expected my book to be delivered within one week. The longest wait I've had for my order was three weeks (usually my books were delivered within 2 weeks). However, considering their unbeatable prices and me not in any rush to get the books, I am still perfectly happy with their service. Also, their books' quality often appear better than described. One time I got a not-so-good book, I emailed them and within 24 hours received my full refund with the option to keep that book as well.
P/S - Props to the writing team for creating such a fun message when the order is shipped. I always enjoyed reading those :))
I have used BWB many times in the past, but not for the past year or so--and apparently their shipping policy has changed. I ordered a book and (as always) checked "standard mail" as the shipping method. But they are not sending it via US mail! I've been waiting for the book for 17 days, and have been told I will need to wait for another week to claim a refund. Why is it taking so long? Because they are not actually shipping this via "standard mail," as they said they would. They're using a third-rate bulk shipper called BestWay Parcel. And the kicker is, they berate me for "choosing" this method of shipping: I chose it so, they say, I should suck it up when my book takes 25 days to arrive. However, what I chose was "Standard MAIL." Apparently "Standard Mail" is the following: "Our Standard Shipping provider is BestWay Parcel. Shipments are trucked in bulk to a nearby sorting facility, where they are sorted and sent to a regional processing facility closer to your destination. From the regional facility, the package is sent to your local USPS office, where your carrier will deliver it to the address on your order." Since when is that "Standard Mail? Don't use this vendor unless you want to wait a month for your book to arrive.
The books I ordered did not arrive. The company did not have a tracking number, because it was international, so there was no way to trace my shipment.
I contacted them when my books did not arrive, and they told me to "wait."
I contacted them again to ask for a refund after I waited for them to arrive, and they told me they would not refund me any money because it was past 60 days. However, I had contacted them within the 60 days to tell them my shipment hadn't arrived (when they told me to "wait".) How convenient that they didn't mention their 60 day policy at that point. It's a total scam. I wonder if they even shipped my books in the first place. I will not use their service again, and I will tell me friends not to use it either.
Just updating that I have received all of my books ordered-6 in all. All matched descriptions listed, (I received one library copy, the others were gently used to brand new).
I love Better World Books! They always have titles hard for me to find elsewhere and at the best price. I love the selection and courtesy. Books are shipped free, but you have to keep in mind it is media Mail, WHICH IS VERY SLOW. The condition of all the books I have ordered fit the descriptions listed pretty well, and sometimes they have sales and a coupon. Love them. My go to bookstore.
Ordered a hardcover book from Better World Books off Abe.com. The item description was for "very good condition, in good shape" but no mention as former library copy or that the cover/sleeve was missing. Advertised quick shipping but I received it over 2 weeks later. Won't buy from again.
I ordered a book from them through biblio.com. The first 8 chapters were torn out of the book! This was not disclosed in their listing. Deceitful business. Do not order anything from them.
Ordered two books on June 3rd and was emailed two days later that the order was shipped. They went from IN to OH to NC (where I am) within a few days. Tracking stated it had arrived at the shipping partner on June 8th (which is about 60 miles from where I live). After that, nothing! No movement (at least on the tracking) and the USPS tracking number appears to be bogus. USPS told me that they have not received the package yet. It has sat in that shipping facility for 13 days! I could have driven there to pick it up myself it I would have known. This is assuming it really is there and not lost, or worse yet, never really sent there at all. I do not understand why it has sat so close to its destination for that long. Their customer service keeps giving me the run-around and refuse to contact the crappy shipping company to see what the hold-up is. I ordered from them in the past and have always had a good experience. Something has happened with this company in the last couple of years. I don't expect them to stay in business much longer with this kind of practices. GOOD RIDDANCE!
I recently ordered some books thru Barnes and Noble that were used from marketplace sellers> I paid the extr to get these books faster and the price for the quicker shipping was a farce! It has been almost 1 week still no book when Barnes and Noble website showed it to be 2-3 days it now is stated from the seller and them (B & N) that is could actually be up to 6 days! Well that was the amount if I didnt do quick shipping so not only did I pay too much for shipping but still do not have the books when I actually need them for an event! I am a teacher and buy several books for my students for different things we learn about! Wow I really don't think I will be doing business with BetterWorld Books again! With poor shipping. If the prices are good but they don't ship it out for awhile wow that defeats the deal! And wow paying for quick shipping to not get it any quicker than regular!
I've been waiting my order for more than a month and Better World Books refuses to refund me. They've kept changing the delivery date again and again (I've been choosing them over other seller because of the delivery dates) and ask me to wait until an undefined date to ask for refund. At the end of the day, I've lost 55$ and a lot of time dealing with their consumers' service. Oh, and by the way they were pretty unpleasant with me since they told me that, "[i]f this delivery time did not meet [my] needs, [I was] not obligated to place the order", which is inadmissible as they are unable to give me a delivery date!
I've made a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (I'm not the first!) and I hope I could get refund. Nevertheless, I've spent a lot of time demanding that the Internet Order Merchandise Rule be honoured, and time is money.
Hope this review will help you, don't go with them, they are fraudster!
I ordered a book and received confirmation of the order quickly. A few hours later, I received another email stating that the book would be shipping soon. Over 24 hours later, I received an email saying the book had already been sold and they were sorry for any inconvenience. I then looked on eBay and there it was, listed for sale (at a much higher price) from Better World Books. I will no longer be a customer.
Answer: You can probably, maybe able to see them on line somewhere, on an American government site for universities as they are out of the University of Indiana... that's my guess anyway.
Answer: I have only ever had one order go astray and they refunded the purchase as soon as I reported it If you still haven't received your order you should notify them. They will probably refund your purchase as it may have been lost.
Answer: It's a non-profit run by volunteers at several sites around the U.S. Many of their books are from public libraries & in good condition often. They also get donations from the public & some of those are in only Fair or Good condition, though lots are in Very Good/Like New or New condition. My favorite thing about BWB is their free book donations to very poor countries! I've bought from BWB for over 4 years & have bought close to a 100 books. Great non-profit!
