Mercari's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, primarily due to issues with product descriptions, return policies, and inadequate customer support. Many users report receiving items that do not match their descriptions or arrive damaged, with little recourse for refunds. Complaints highlight a lack of effective communication from both sellers and the platform itself, leading to feelings of frustration and mistrust. While some customers appreciate the streamlined buying and selling process, the overwhelming sentiment indicates that unresolved issues and high fees overshadow any positive experiences, suggesting a need for improved customer service and clearer policies.

Now all of the sudden, customer service is rude and not helpful. The main goal seems to be ONLY making money, fleecing buyers with outrageous fees, because they stopped charging fees to sellers, but asking them of course to low their prices, (what many, me included did), so they do not lose a dime.
Their CS was spotty, but not bad overall and now that you are a loyal member means squat, when a simple dispute over a non as described color (listed as silver, but it's gunmetal) arises, saying that "it could be if the lighting...", it was only $20! Yet I am lying? And saying that is not the treatment I expected, they are happy to tell me how to close the account if I wish. Well... I did!
Good riddance. I will not recommend this place to anyone, get out before it sinks.
I just purchased a pair of Birkenstocks and the seller informed me they accidentally (huh?) sold them but had another pair just like them. Then they ghosted me after I asked what that meant. Mercari eventually refunded me but it appears the seller has done this several times. It states each time the buyer canceled the transaction. What? Where is the accountability of the seller who failed to send an item or communicate? It doesn't impact their seller rating at all…still 5 stars. They really need to rethink this as it gives no warning to the next buyer that a seller is completely sketchy.
Mercari allows false advertising from sellers. Seller advertised a good, fully functional phone. It is in poor condition. Charging port is damaged, volume control doesn't work, discharges quickly. BUYER BEWARE!
This company has zero integrity as far as backing up their responsibility as a consignment liaison. When I received an item that looked like it came out of a dumpster and not "like new" as described, I reached out to the seller as well as Mercari without success. I will never be on this site again.
My experience on Mercari was brief but intensely distressing. In less than a week, this platform managed to turn the already painful process of selling my deceased wife's belongings into a nightmare of stress and potential financial loss. Here's why you should avoid Mercari at all costs:
1. Immediate Onslaught of Scammers: Within five minutes of listing my late wife's cherished items, I was bombarded by fraudsters trying to lure me into off-platform communication. This continued relentlessly throughout my short time on the site.
2. Emotional Trauma Compounded: I turned to Mercari out of financial necessity, forced to part with irreplaceable, sentimental items from my beloved late wife. Instead of support, I found a platform that seemed to invite predators and scammers to prey on vulnerable sellers like myself.
3. Ignored Fraud Reports: In just one week, I reported over 7-10 users for attempting to bypass Mercari's rules. I never heard back on any of these reports, leaving me to fend off scammers alone while trying to sell emotionally significant items.
4. Arbitrary Account Limitation: Despite my diligence in following rules and reporting fraud, Mercari limited my account without warning or clear explanation. This jeopardized the sale of my most valuable item - my late wife's engagement ring.
5. Risk of Devastating Loss: The account limitation put me at risk of losing both a precious memory and much-needed funds. Mercari's actions effectively placed my late wife's ring in a stranger's hands without guaranteed payment.
6. Callous Customer Service:
- No live support for urgent, emotionally charged situations
- Broken promises on response times (5 hours for account limitations)
- Only cold, automated responses for critical issues involving irreplaceable items
7. Seller Vulnerability: In less than a week, I went from a grieving husband trying to make ends meet to a potential victim of both scammers and Mercari's own flawed systems.
8. Fraud-Friendly Environment: The platform's failure to address rampant scam attempts, even when repeatedly reported, creates a haven for fraudsters targeting vulnerable sellers.
9. False Sense of Security: Mercari's stated policies on user safety and fraud prevention proved worthless in practice, especially cruel given the personal nature of the items I was forced to sell.
In just one week, Mercari managed to add significant trauma to an already painful chapter of my life. The platform's practices are not just questionable; they're potentially ruinous for sellers in vulnerable positions. I urge anyone considering Mercari, especially those selling items of personal significance or out of financial necessity, to seek alternatives. There must be more compassionate and secure platforms that won't exploit your emotional and financial vulnerabilities.
Protect your cherished possessions, your peace of mind, and your heart - stay far, far away from Mercari.
This web site is terrible. They have pictures of the item but sends you something totally different. For example. The bags are clearly vintage but you receive a brand new fake bag plastic bag. They have so many sellers websites doing this. They are are usually shipping out of Chino, California. You order one thing and receive another. They don't refund money instead they credit.
I recently requested a return for my purchase that arrived with a strong odor of mothballs. I told that I am allergic to chemicals. They denied my request stating that odors are subjective an are now excluded from returns their updated return policy and that their decision was final.Yet smells odors is what I had selected to submit my request for return. They have not replied to my response that to their denial. In my reply I stated that I get a migraine from chemicals and can't even use them in my home.
If a seller ghosts and doesn't ship your order you have to wait 15 days before your money is refunded. There is also a $2 transaction fee to transfer funds to your bank account.
My silver coin listings on the Mercari app were removed for being a "Prohibited Item". "Precious metals", in accordance with their policy. I find this highly discriminatory because they are not removing the other THOUSANDS of silver and gold content listings on their app (like jewelry, coins, etc). HOW ON EARTH CAN THEY ALLOW THOUSANDS TO POST THE SAME STUFF AND ONLY REMOVE MINE (and a few select others)? I think their "policy" is a bunch of crap when it comes to this category. Every other site I know of allows this category, so people naturally presume that they do to. That's why they HAVE THOUSANDS OF LISTINGS in this category. But to selectively enforce their "policy" is a ridiculous abomination! Either they need to figure out a way to do it across the board, or SIT BACK AND LET IT HAPPEN (or change the policy). These items aren't hurting anybody and besides, do they have ANY IDEA of the HUGE amount of transactions they're collecting fees from? That's why they don't really want to fix it. Cause if they did, it would've been fixed a long time ago. From the programming side of things it's not difficult, unless they just have an inadequate IT department. It's all about THE BENJAMINS SILVER AND GOLD SELLERS GENERATE FOR THEIR COMPANY! That's why it stays the way it is. Our sales bring in BIG DOLLARS, and that's a fact. If their company doesn't like it THAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! But in the mean time LEAVE MY STUFF, and others in this category, ALONE AND PUT MY LISTINGS BACK UNTIL THEY DO! I think they should reinstate my listings until they can fairly enforce their policies (which they're either incapable of or don't want to do, cause look at all the listings … are they crazy!). IT'S NOT FAIR! Not even close. They apparently just want be hard on their "policy" without regard to the fairness to their users. Just goes to prove that for some reason they care more about their policy being a POLICY and THE MONEY THESE LISTINGS BRING IN than their sellers being happy.
I have been a member over Mercari for several years and have generally been a satisfied user until recently. In my last 3 purchases over the last month and a half I have had issues with two of them that their customer service has been inept at addressing. For the first of the two orders that had issues my item arrived damaged i immediately reached out to Mercari about this but they failed to respond within the 72 hour window they provide buyers to report and handle an issue. I was seeking a partial refund as the order had been a set and most of the set had been alright. But they failed to respond and I had to bring PayPals customer support in before they even attempted to rectify the issue. The second order I had an issue with involved a seller that I was unaware was using a stock image. Mercari does not allow the use of just stock images per their own policies. When I submitted a request to return the item they denied my request and did not allow me to rate that seller to warn others about this sellers practices that breaks Mercari's own policies. Mercari customer support, while more responsive than the first transaction I had issue with, has been less than helpful. I have asked them five separate times to explain how a listing using stock photos which they don't allow is consider "as described" and they have failed each and every time asked to answer that question. I will no longer be selling or shopping on Mercari and I would advise any who continue to use their services to beware as they don't have their customers best interests in mind and go against their own policies.
MERCARI LIED!
I purchased a jacket on Mercari and I received it the jacket was shedding and falling apart I sent a pictures to Mercari as soon as I got the jacket in the mail the jacket was falling apart I sent them five or six pictures they never responded in one to two days like they say they were They denied my case and told me that my case doesn't apply to their rules then I sent them a regular email from my email and they tried to tell me that they had told me to send more pictures within 24 hours and that I didn't do it they never sent me a message like that just be careful on this website There is a lot of retail theft going on with companies. I had to make a chargeback with my credit card and I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau too
I have been a seller on the Mercari platform for 7 years with over 1200 reviews and a five-star rating. Mercari denied my payout for a Kate Spade wallet sold on their platform on July 3,2024, for $55. I dropped off the package at my local post office on July 6,2024. Due to a USPS error, the package was not scanned immediately and was subsequently lost. As a result, the buyer cancelled the order on July 18,2024, due to the delay. However, on August 6,2024, the package was scanned at a location an hour away from where I originally dropped it off, and on August 12,2024, the buyer contacted me to confirm that the item had been delivered.
Mercari has denied my request for a payout, claiming that I shipped the item after the order was cancelled. This is incorrect and impossible, as I shipped the item well before the cancellation date. According to Mercari's own policy, a seller should receive payment if the transaction was cancelled by Mercari or the buyer, the seller confirms they shipped the item by hitting "confirm" on Mercari, and the seller has not been reimbursed through Mercari shipping protection. My case meets all of these criteria.
The delay in scanning and delivery was due to an error by USPS, which was beyond my control. The tracking information showing a scan on August 6 does not reflect the actual shipping date, but rather when USPS found and scanned the lost package. This is a breach of contract!

I have set my case up on the web. I am beyond disgusted with the lack of professionalism, consumer care or just concern. This was either a scam, or a very stupid seller that sent a horribly packaged box, with minimal tape to ups and later usps, uninsured ($760!) so neither carried will cover the missing item. 14 employees have just pushed this around, nobody cared and MERCARI rated the seller! Telling me no refund. BS!💩💥
I have bought many things but recently ALL kinds of hidden fees --- I was supposed to pay $29 plus $3.99 shipping which was disclosed --- All of a sudden I was paying another fee for processing my payment? Another SERVICE FEE? What -- suddenly I'm pay almost $39
NOT GOOD
One star is me being generous.
Beware when selling items on Mercari.
They provide cover for scammers.
I sold a laptop which was then returned for bogus reasons (Mercari instantly approved the return). When I received the item everything looked okay. I set the laptop back up for myself but noticed that my graphics card wasn't working. After days of troubleshooting I realized that the buyer had switched out my motherboard with a damaged one. I know this because the motherboard has a completely different serial number. I've owned the laptop from new and no one has been inside that machine while it was in my hands. I have the original box and stamp showing the correct serial number. Upon further investigation I found out that the motherboard isn't even the correct model for my laptop. Despite overwhelming evidence of this fraud Mercari will do nothing because it wasn't bought to their attention within 24 hours of me receiving the returned laptop. This scam is specifically engineered to make reporting the problem within that time an impossibility. I'm left with a badly functioning machine that I can't even sell because it doesn't have the correct motherboard. Mercari couldn't care less. I've reported it to them multiple times. Each time they point to their 24 hour nonsense. They do not care. Save yourself the hassle and DON'T SELL OR BUY WITH MERCARI.
I purchased a soldering kit. It arrived while I was on vacation. When I got home and opened the package, I found that it would not turn on. I contacted Mercari and they said they would not let me return it because they have a six day window for returns. No exceptions, despite seven email exchanges. I contacted the seller, they would would only give me a $20 refund. Horrible policies and insulting customer service.
I bought item on Mercari and requested return within 3 days because it looked different on the pic than what I received. They denied my return and I stuck with an item I hate and 1k less in my packet. Be very careful with them. I know I'm done buying from them.
You bid on something think your saving money by the time you get all the "fees" I can buy at the store cheaper so nah don't waste your time
This is the most fraudulent Market Place online. They are actually in with the scammers. They dont policee them and they dont protect the buyers. And when you are scammed they dont put in any effort to investigate and dont want to refund you. You have to go through your credit card company. They have sellers scamming. Who will send you tracking but meanwhile ship a dummy to a a different address and you will get a notification as delivered. Then Mercari will tell you it was delivered so they can't do nothing about it. Meanwhile USPS has a policy they won't tell you where it was delivered to and Mercari won't even tell you the address of delivery but instead tell you it was delivered and we are closing our case. Bottom line is dont bother buying or selling with this fraudulent market Place
I am absolutely done with Mercari. They have HORRENDOUS customer service and this is the last time I will be getting STOLE from. There have been numerous occasions where I will mail a package out and get a notification that an extra THIRTY-FIVE DOLLARS is taken out of my account for a shipping adjustment that is FALSE. Please tell me how a lightweight cotton shirt weighs 9 pounds? When I dispute something so ridiculous to Mercari they tell me USPS is right and basically too bad.
Answer: Please contact the Federal Trade Commision and Internet Crime Complaint Center. (IC3). It is illegal to keep anyones money! The IRS would like to know where all this money is also? Whos paying taxes on it? FTC will get your money! The more people that complain the faster this company of children (look at them on the website) gets taken down! The faster we all get paid!
Answer: DID YOU GET YOUR MONEY BACK?
Answer: Good question. Poshmark charges a ridiculous $6.99 shipping fee for everything, regardless of weight. Only thing is, you cannot mail anything for less than $2.66 but I see your point

You just need to rate your seller in order for payment to be released. Answer: Hi Richard, Many factors affect how quickly an item will sell; inventory, seasonality, competition, price, and so forth. Some items sell in minutes, some take a bit longer. Here are some of our seller tips: https://www.mercari.com/help_center/category/2/
