SunBasket looks pretty, the meals were good to okay. I was sticking with it. Then a shipment didn't show up. They make it difficult to find contact information, and when I did try to contact them I wound up contacting the shipping company instead, which wasn't obvious because the form I filled out was on a SunBasket branded page with SunBasket colors... no reason to think I wasn't talking to SunBasket. Then when I discovered it was the shipping company, I finally located a contact form actually for SunBasket, and told them I never received my food and included a tracking number for proof. They got back to me saying I didn't contact them fast enough so they were only crediting my next order 50% of the money. That smells of a hoodwink a mile away. I am trying to get a refund and close my account, but so far they refuse to refund my money, only credit another shipment.
NOT RECOMMENDED.

EDIT: After my original review, someone from SunBasket reached out to me through sitejabber and quickly resolved my issue with a 100% refund. This person also said they will be looking to make sure the issues that happened to me will be addressed so that others will not suffer a similar fate. As such, I have adjusted my review from two to four stars. I hope SunBasket can make reporting missing orders an easier and more transparent experience.

The human resources lady
October 22, 2019

My supervisor/boss told me i was allowed to go drink a cup of coffee to warm up ecause i was cold. The Human Resources lady named Ebro/Ebru (not sure the correct spelling) told me i could not be in there because it wasnt my break. I explained to her that i was allowed and she still fired me

Terrible customer service
September 12, 2019

I tried sun basket for a while then I put my account on hold. After having my account on hold for a bit I randomly got a charge to my bank account yesterday. Now meals are supposed to be delivered that I didn't even choose. As soon as I knew that there was a problem I contacted the company. They refused to stop the order and refund my money even though my account was on hold. This is really bad business practice. I emailed customer service back and forth. The only thing they would offer me was $20 credit to my account. Sorry but I am never using your service again so why would I want a credit?

AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE
September 11, 2019

I received a notification, from Paypal, that I made a payment to Sunbasket. I thought that couldn't be because I skipped each week. I do that regularly. I looked and apparently my skips had been placed back to approved orders. I did not go into my account to change them over to approved orders. So I tried talking to customer service to cancel it and refund the money but they gave me several awful excuses as to why I wasn't getting a refund. One of the excuses exposed them as liars. Telling me that I couldn't stop the order because they already started my order but later said that I could change my meals. But if they started my order, how could they change my food? I am going to send a complaint to Paypal and see if they can help.

Hi Michele, thank you for reaching out. We are a weekly subscription-based service and upon reviewing your account we did not see an attempt was made to skip your delivery for the week of 9/15. As we are a subscription-based service, we have a very strict cutoff time and can not make changes or modifications past the cutoff time. We were willing to make a one-time exception for you and change your recipe selection, which you declined. We also offered you a courtesy refund, which you declined.

I tried to place an order of one 4 person meal for several weeks in a row, and every time I placed the order for under $100 (the amount of my gift certificate gifted from my employer). However, each time they suspended my order for adding an extra $30 of fees due to hidden upcharges that were not showing on the order. They will not allow me to view the menu options or place another order unless I enter my credit card information and subscribe, which based on their hidden upcharges and the reviews describing the difficulty of canceling service, I refuse to do. So I am left with $100 credit which they will not honor or allow me to access.

TL; DR: it irks me when businesses are non-transparent, do not strive to hear from unsatisfied customers, and treat loyal customers poorly.

From a food perspective, the meals are fine - some are a hit, some are a miss. It's nice to have a wide selection for options and to receive their magazine with recipe ideas. Agree with other reviewers that it's more expensive than it needs to be and you can find meal delivery options with higher quality ingredients at a comparable price point.

I give this company one star for its terrible customer service. My husband and I recently moved, changed our address using the Sun Basket app, and were expecting our food shipment for the week to be delivered tomorrow. Upon checking the tracking information, I saw that the delivery was going to my old address so I immediately reached out to Customer Service to rectify. Despite the fact that I'm confident that the issue was on Sun Basket's end (I remember submitting the updated address through the app and am very Type A about this sort of thing), the customer service representative refused to issue a credit in full to my account, refund me in full, or explore other options. Also didn't receive a name or phone call or anything; had to settle it all over text. So yeah: it's a $70+ sunk cost on my end for a mistake I didn't make.

I'm further convinced that something shady's going on on at this business. When I went to permanently unsubscribe my account, Sun Basket's website would not let me leave feedback or submit my cancellation when I chose my reason for leaving as "I had problems with my Sun Basket account" (sub-option: issues with delivery). By the way, I tried to cancel my subscription/select this option on my Mac, PC, AND through my app, hoping it would allow me to provide them with my feedback. So it's definitely not a user error. Actually, the ONLY way any of the three platforms would let me submit my cancellation was when I checked the reason for me leaving as "Too busy to cook meals." Seriously, Sun Basket? You don't want to hear from your unsatisfied customers to improve your model and improve your customer service?

My advice is: RUN and take your business ANYWHERE else. There are many great alternatives (recommend checking out Purple Carrot, Peach Dish, Home Chef, and Bon Appetit box to name a few). Wish I could link to their websites on this review.

I ordered 6 meals and I received an ill packed box, barely cold proteins and 1 small steak, one small chicken breast, and small package of shrimp that was supposed to complete 6 meals?
This is the worst box from a food delivery service I have ever received!
I switched fro Home Chef because wanted to new menus and what a mistake!

RUN AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY... Run.
First order with the company and everything arrived a day late and warm to the touch. One small icepack in the bottom... Fine I will call them and let them know. First order had a promo code and my order only cost 51 dollars vs 100+ they wanted. Well I didn't get my first meal with this company because of the issues.
Called customer service and explained they didn't make it happen.
I explained that I had a coupon and that I would like one of following to happen.
1) Comp my next meals
2) Credit my account on the total paid and reapply the coupon

The Rep told me only the meats are ruined so she would only credit me for the cost of the meat. REALLY? I asked for a supervisor in hopes that she may address the issue. She was no better and couldn't understand why I wouldn't be happen with just paying full cost and never getting the incentive they offered me to join. I told her refund me and cancel my account then. Her attitude reeked of I don't Give a Flip. I told her that I would be writing a negative review and letting people know. The supervisor said that was fine. No concern in the world that you just lost a customer and are getting a bad review for not doing the right thing.
The Takeaway.
1) SUNBASKET DOESN'T care about its customers
2) RUDE AND Dismissive Reps and Supervisors
3) Overpriced
4) Better companies to deal with out there... Don't waste your time... They won't help you when something goes wrong.

I really really really want to love SunBasket because I'm totally dependent on a meal delivery kit but two weeks of thrown out salmon is getting ridiculous. Last week the salmon juice leaked all over the entire box leaving it inedible and this week it arrived warm, MUSHY and smelly atrocious. Ughghgg.

I was interested in SunBasket because of its claim of organic ingredients, and wild-caught fish and seafood. I've tried Blue Apron and Home Chef and while they were ok, I was excited to try a meal delivery service that had the highest ratings (albeit more expensive), and had more options (vegan, paleo, and carb conscious) compared to the other brands.
I tried our first meal last night - seared salmon with panang curried cauliflower rice. I like the curried cauliflower rice - very flavorful. But I was shocked when I looked at the salmon - clearly marked Keta salmon. If you don't know, Keta is chum salmon (bait!). I decided to be open minded and try it. It was absolutely pale and tasteless. And now it is too late to cancel next week's delivery, which contains, you guessed it - more salmon which will probably be keta. I'm so disappointed in this company. So, next week I will be buying wild caught soho, king, or sockeye salmon in my local grocery store, at my own expense to go with the meal. Because really, who eats chum salmon?

I have tried most all of the meal kit delivery services (blue apron, home chef, sun basket, green chef and plated) and by far Sun Basket is the worst one. Not only is the customer service terrible but it's more expensive than most others while the ingredients are of the same or lower quality. I received wilted produce and rotten fish and "customer service" would only refund $10. I recommend any of the other meal services mentioned above instead of Sun Basket

Hi Anna, we're so sorry to hear that you received ingredients you were unable to enjoy. Since our ingredients are organic(no-GMO's), predicting their shelf-life is a bit finicky but, our Team works hard to make sure quality is not an issue. Should we ever miss that mark, we encourage all customers to reach out to us so we may correct it and compensate the account accordingly. My husband and I were once again looking into home delivery meal services. I noticed I had an App already on my phone for Sun Basket and couldn't remember having looked into it before.

I opened the App and signed in to research their menu options. I checked a few options to see if they would work with the current diet we are on. Then my husband reminded me something shady re: billing had happened with this company the last time we joined and we cancelled because of it. So I left the App without having hit any final purchase button or without entering any credit card info.

Imagine my surprise when PayPay notified me that they had issued a payment to Sun Basket. It suddenly was very reminiscent of my experience prior and the main reason I cancelled my subscription.

Something is very shady with this company and how they have their App set up (pre-checked food items, that you can change). If you don't plan on being charged for the following week's menu, don't even open it. Once the payment has been issued you can't make changes or cancel. So basically I'm stuck with $62 worth of food that isn't even compatible with the diet I'm on (low carbs). I put in a request to speak with a Supervisor re: why this keeps happening with their App.

Finally, a "Supervisor" messaged me after seeing my review on Yelp, excusing their inexcusable actions (see pic). They still refuse to call me to explain how my account was reactivated by just signing into the App. They also wouldn't change the (supposed) order to include something I can actually eat. Customer BEWARE! The WORST customer service EVER!

Date of experience: April 6, 2019
Sunny B. — Sunbasket Rep

Hi Lisa,

Reactivation/changes to accounts can only be done through human interactions/acknowledgements.

As a security purpose, customers must insert payment information through our site or app. Our representatives, no matter how high in stature, do not have the capability to insert this information.

One of our priorities is providing transparency. During registration, customers will receive a ‘Welcome’ email, that outlines how to manage your account. Should a customer feel they are unable to manage their account or disagree with the contract, we are able to deactivate at anytime.

Within the ‘Welcome’ email we note, that should the need/want to deactivate an account, it must be done prior to our cutoff time(every Wednesday 12 PM PST). After our cutoff time, we are unable to stop or change a request from being fulfilled. Finding an order between tens of thousands of requests, is nearly physically impossible; similar to finding a needle in a haystack.

One of our Supervisors was able to reach out to you and explain how the process of reactivating an account is done and the measures we place to ensure no accidental activations.

This junk was not worth the effort of boiling water for. The quality of the produce was terrible. Sweet potato was very small and pitted throughout. The cucumber looked like it was a year old. The meat and salmon were not fit to eat. Tough steak and Salmon was old! DO NOT ORDER!

Spoiled Ingredients
January 21, 2019

The recipes sounded exciting, so I took a break from my usual food delivery service to try Sun Basket. The food was not cold when it arrived and I was home for both deliveries and able to bring inside immediately. In the first delivery the produce was not fresh and the salmon was too fishy to eat safely. The second delivery had old, white crusted snap peas, black mint, wet, brown scallions and old udon noodles that stuck to the bottom of the pot in a big hard glob and had to be tossed. Wanted to love this.

Lacking
January 21, 2019

Received as a gift. Feel bad because my first meal was severely disappointing. So time consuming. I work till 5 everyday and don't get home till after 6, so I don't appreciate recipes that say 20-30 minutes and really take 45 minutes... I don't normally follow recipes. Use spices and ingredients according to smell and experience. I also don't know the words for how to cut things. There is only 1 picture, so, unless you see it in that one picture, you're out of luck. (What does "pieces" mean when referring to a round veggie?) The provided "spices" and herbs aren't enough and salt and pepper are the only recommended additions. The taste was bland. The ingredients didn't equal to 2 portions. Enough beans for 1 portion while too much radichio. (Personal opinion: Radichio as the majority and overwhelming ingredient is disgusting. Needs balance and there was none.)"Cancellation" online just means you suspend your account. Doesn't mean refund. Have to do more work for that. I'm thinking of just forwarding it back to the gift giver as this overall experience is severe lacking. When something that is supposed to relieve stress causes more stress, you know there are issues.

Not Bad, not the best
November 2, 2018

To be fair to Sun Basket, a lot of people complain about inability to cancel subscription. I was almost there. Took me 25 minutes to finally find the phone number. Links take you nowhere. Finally, found the phone number under Help and it was a breeze. Customer Service was excellent. The few meals we ate were ok. Not the best but not bad. What had me calling to cancel was the first charge that was a full charge. You receive a discount on the first order. Home Chef has much better meals, quality is higher and much more organized in the package. Plus, they are $20 cheaper. They cost $60 a week, my second bill from Sun Basket was $80. I can buy a lot of groceries for $80. They just can't compare to Home Chef and not worth the cost.

Had high hopes for Sun Basket, but my first week was on the FedEx truck for more than 13 hours. When we unpacked the box, the ingredients were barely cool. Sun Basket said they'd give me a refund for the spoiled ingredients but I haven't seen it come through. Second order, also on the truck for hours, included yellow and brown arugula and a pear that not only wasn't ripe, it had a worm hole all the way through it. $14 per meal--that includes tax--for 5 ounces of ground beef, an onion, a lemon, and a handful of raisins seemed excessive to me! I canceled right away.
