I'm a Turing Machine Learning Scientist from Malaysia. I'm mainly working on analyzing and modelling job-matching data. A very major advantage of Turing remote work is we do not have to waste any time and money in transportation to the workplace. In my country, Data Science jobs are mainly available in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. The commute between my place and workplace used to take >1 hr and it was highly irritating. This is even worse than working overtime as spending time in work is much more meaningful compared to spending time in such way.
In addition, as a resident in a developing country, working remotely with a company in US or any developed country usually provides significantly higher pay compared to most local jobs due to the difference in terms of currency values.

I was introduced to Turing through a friend who sang praises about their remote work culture. Now I'm writing this during the infamous 2020-21 pandemic where the world was forced to go remote. But here was a company which has been bridging the geographical gaps and vaulting over the language barriers for years! Curious, I decided to apply for a position as a Content Writer and sent in my resume. I didn't really expect much out of it, after all I had no experience working for a global company, only ever having worked at local companies but they got back to me quick!
The interview and onboarding process was seamless. What came as a shock to me was how much free reign was handed to you. Of course there are certain deadlines to be met, but working with people from all kinds of time zones is a unique experience all together. The kinds of doors that open up for your career when you work with Turing are endless. The work culture is joyfully relaxed where you are encouraged to reach out to as many people as possible, across countries and departments. One would assume that remote working can get pretty lonely, but not at Turing! There is so much going on that it's sometimes hard to keep track of all the organized chaos. Chess championships, Christmas games, Fitness challenges… you name it!
There is no one breathing down your neck, communication is encouraged and asking for guidance has never been so easy yet sublime. It's not very often where you wake up on a Monday morning and DON'T feel that dread creeping in as you face another long week of work. Your home is your work place; you are in your most comfortable zone, working during hours that you picked out and at a company whose work culture is like Wonderland! It's almost unbelievably magical how many aspects seem to be perfectly aligned to suit your comfort!

I'm the Lead Designer at Turing.com and I've been working for the past 2 years on all things design at the company ranging from product features (UI/UX) to a little bit of animation and creatives for ads. I've seen the company grow from a pre-seed stage to closing our Series B round at the end of 2020 and I've been able to contribute to and grow with it.

UI/UX design is still in its infancy here in Colombia, especially if you don't live in a large city, like Bogotá, Medellín, or Cali, so the opportunities are scarce and the compensation is not the best. I used to spend 2 hours every day getting to work and then returning back home by public transit and had to wake up very early in order to get to the office in time. Now I can get more hours of sleep and enjoy time with my family back in my hometown.

I love the flexibility of my work hours, the opportunity to work with people coming from Google, Facebook, or LinkedIn, to name a few, having financial stability as well as the possibility of getting back to traveling around the world once the pandemic ends (working at Turing allowed me to travel to Europe during my first year).

For aspiring Turing software developers, a word of advice. Sometimes you might have the feeling that you are not good enough in your area of expertise. Maybe you are comparing yourself to a successful designer or engineer on social media working at a Silicon Valley company and wonder if you'll ever get an opportunity like that. When you've been working at a local level only, taking that initial step is hard: is my English good enough, are my skills as good as I think they are, how do I even get a chance? My advice is that now is the time to take that step, that the opportunities are now global and that your journey to work with a US company starts here.

Also, while in Argentina the debate is still around whether the job posts should include gender, the roles include doing more paperwork, and the career options are more restricted, at Turing the debate is around where we can innovate. Turing promotes horizontality, so feel free to ask, to suggest, to give feedback. If you come from an old-school company, don't be afraid to change your mindset. Know that hierarchy is not what matters most, but innovation.

Working remotely with Turing.com is an amazing experience. My job here is in the Dev Success team and specifically in People Operations. We basically conduct onboarding, queries, engagements & exit interviews for all Developers. I feel really lucky to be a Turing employee!
