Its shocking the level of incompetency exhibited by the support of a company this size. Tickets last DAYS in the queue and in my situation didn't event get resolved. Their language towards clients is impersonal and the chatbot is horrible. I have worked with freelancers since 2014 on various platforms. My review is not to do with talent on the platform. This is about the worse company I have had to encounter on that freelance space in terms if support. I will recommend you look somewhere else.
There has been fraud on my account for over 2 months now where a freelancer got into my account for another country and charged $250. The freelancer's name is Suleman Ahmed. I complained to Upwork and they said there's nothing they can do even though I have a message from the freelancer saying "Ok manny I use your fund. I return your fund in 1 week. Send me Account number I send you.
I with draw you fund." This happened again with another freelancer name Muhammad Faizan and he took $650 without me hiring him for the job. Can someone please help me? I have worked with IT for over 3 months now and I haven't received any resolution. I'm sure Hayden Brown wouldn't like to hear about this type of service. I've been with Upwork since they were formerly known as Elance. So we are talking over 9 years.
I've had some really good contracts with Upwork and I'm grateful for it. However, the platform does barely nothing to help freelancers, except putting them in contact with clients. And even then, most clients are terrible. I think it is unethical to accept clients that pay people $3/h or $5 for a 2000 words article. If the platform can't offer a legit minimum wage, I think it is useless. And even then, it takes 20% of our money, even if we just made $5. So many clients are disrespectful and have unrealistic expectations and Upwork does not protect us. I have also lost a lot of contracts because Upwork deleted them even though they were totally legit. With all the money they made from my work, I would expect them to have a live chat for support. Instead, it takes them a day to answer by email. I keep getting frustrated when using this platform. If you ever want to use it, remember that Upwork is not your friend and it does not want to protect freelancers.
I wish I could give zero star and do not believe the positive reviews because it's all fake. I hired a freelancer on Upwork who delivered a mediocre job in draft. Not only he took a month to deliver an incomplete bad job instead of 2 weeks as agreed, he submitted the work to a third party to do it for him. By the way, he failed to disclose this to me before accepting the offer which is a scam. When I complained to Upwork, the mediation person called" May" refused to cancel the job and refund my money even though I provided facts that I was being defrauded. Upwork is a scam site, freelancers tell lies about their knowledge, talent, expertise on their profiles, lure you in then submit the project to someone else overseas in India, Pakistan or Blagandhesh to do a poor job. Upwork fully knows about this dirty game but will do nothing because they are making money out of it. I will never use this platform again. I'm sure there will be a class action against Upwork someday because of this scam. Stay away! Be aware!
When you apply for work on Upwork, they have "Connects" which you purchase to bid higher on a job. I was able to PURCHASE several Connects in order to do so.
HOWEVER, on the flip side, the site wouldn't allow me to link my Paypal or Debit Card or Direct Deposit to get paid. This makes no sense. I spent four hours trying to contact them for help. Their "Chat" gave me a runaround. I put in several tickets. No one got back to me. I have a client that I only did half the job for and I might miss the deadline because I refuse to work if I'm not getting paid. This puts both me and my client in a bad spot. Hopefully they will Google me and we can continue to work together.
All that said, I DO NOT recommend Upwork! Plus the fact you have to sift though hundreds of low balling jobs to find at least one that pays you what your worth is -- IF you'll even get paid. My expectations for this site is extremely low. I'm better off using Craig's List where I found many clients who pay well above average.
Chat service is very poor. The information is repetitive and customer service is lacking. There is no live agent to solve your issues. So frustrating I am trying to file a dispute and their online instruction isn't clear.

I recently file a dispute with Upwork to get a refund from the Freelancer I was working work; they ruled in favor of him despite my proof. I am currently this case as the service I contracted for was /isn't delivered. You are better off with Thumbtuck if you are in USA as most of the freelancers on Uptown are in the middle east or India and the quality of service is tend to be poor. If something go wrong were you end up requiring mediation from Uptown, they will rule against you despite the facts you present. I made a mistake working through them despite a friend's warning. Fiverr is another bad one. They are all filled with scammers.

There are many scammers on UPWORK, but most of all after you do work for people they can remove the contract and YOU WILL NEVER GET PAID! UPWORK makes it very difficult to contact them regarding issues. Very unprofessional. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.
Also you cannot access your money until you hit $100 which is a very long time worth of work, and I imagine many people do not get their money as I will not!

We posted a project on Upwork over 4 months ago. The freelancer did not perform and refuses to refund the money stating he spent it and offered a payment arrangement. Upwork did not protect us instead replied that it is too late to dispute the charges, too late because the freelancer strung us along for months promising to work harder. We lost 4 months time and $4,500.00 plus the pending legal fees to fight it. Upwork has all the factual evidence and will not hold the freelancer responsible. I was scammed by the platform, we trusted the ratings and never expected to be victimized as we have.
In good faith I started a design project on upwork and deposited money into an escrow account with them. I told designer that I was entering my busy season and if we did not get it done before then I may have to put it on hold. The work was not completed before our seasonal slam on my other business, so I left the money in escrow thinking I could pick up project again in a month or two when things slowed down. When I went back into upwork a month later, my escrow money was stolen, given to the designer for a project they never even completed. $350 that I thought was going to be sitting there to be spent on my project and it's gone. Live and learn, will never deal with upwork again.
I hired a freelancer on Upwork.com, who ended up scamming me for big money. I tried to get help from customer service, but they refused to do anything! Stay away from this scammy website! It is very similar to Fiverr, both full of scammy freelancers and have poor customer support!
Upwork is a site full of professionals and employers
I have registered there and when I scroll through to see available jobs, it baffles me.
I will advice on professionals from video editing, autocad artists, writers and any artisans to check them out

If you're a freelancer, Upwork will connect you with clients that are of high value and professional. There are a few clients who just don't know what they want, and it's our responsibility to break down the descriptions to them, but there are a few of them who end up assigning the job without expert advice which eventually leads to misunderstanding and bad reviews. Upwork is awesome, especially when dealing with clients that know their requirements beforehand.
I have been to Upwork for more than 7 years. All I can say is such a great experience. It's already a livelihood to me.
It has been almost 3 months since I'm on Upwork. I find it very convenient and useful to utilize my skills. It has helped me a lot grooming and enhancing my skills as well. Very safe and easy to use. Enjoying working there. Attached below is the first project I got on Upwork and that was special.
Title is self-explanatory, Upwork just wasted hours of my time for no reason and disrupted my business by freezing my account a full week before my card expired.
They froze the account literally the day after successfully billing me, even despite the card still being active.
It has now been 36 hours since I updated my card details and the account remains frozen. Support takes over 15 hours per response. Totally unacceptable.
UPDATE: Over 48 hours later, Upwork finally replied and unfroze the account. No apology or explanation offered. My business operations were disrupted for two full business days and Upwork support is completely unapologetic.
Massive waste of time, very frustrated & unhappy with Upwork's service.
Upwork is a reliable site for looking for talent. It is also a website that guarantees the safety of these freelancers. Upwork helps freelancers and employers to achieve their goal with ease. In any case, as a freelancer, upwork allowed me to achieve what I was aiming for in 3 years.

Answer: I am a customer and have had a really horrible experience. Upwork claims a 100% guarantee before you pay anything. That is not true. The process is actually quite horrible. You put money in escrow. You only get your money back after a bad contract if the freelancer agrees to release the money. If the freelancer refuses, you get a bargain offer to still pay them something but still you are paying for a bad job you can't use. Then, if you refuse to bargain over a bad job, you are told that it will cost you an additional $389 to arbitrate with a 3rd party affiliate that the customer (me), the freelancer (scammer) and Upwork (ripoff enabler) has to pay. I took it all the way to arbitration with the end result being that Upwork decided that I was just too uninformed to know their policy and that they would give me a one time only refund of my original amount. What they didn't tell me what that they just gave me a "credit" of my original amount and that was the end. So I am still out the original amount and can't get my money back. This sight is a ripoff. Plain and simple.
