If I could give a zero star I would. I bought a textbook and ended up switching classes. I asked to cancel the order prior to shipping and they said they couldn't process a return unless it was a fault of the seller. Very poor customer service. Will not purchase from this company again and definitely do not recommen.
The seller on AbeBooks.com scammed me. They sent a $2 dollar DVD instead of the $200 book I ordered. When I contacted the seller, they said they don't have the item I ordered but could probably track one down, if I gave them a few weeks. I immediately initiated a return process. They already received the item back but haven't refunded my money, a week later. At this point, they've had my money for a month, while I jump through hoops.
I contacted AbeBooks for assistance, via the web site, but haven't received a single word back from the company. Why would you buy anything from this site? There are no phone numbers to call for help. And there is no accountability for the sellers on the AbeBooks site. I was suckered. Won't happen again.
We've placed a number of orders from AbeBooks, all for unusual, rare or old titles. On every occasion they had the book available and shipped it to me quickly. I've never had a problem with this seller.
I ordered a book from David Burnett Book via Abebooks. Steer well clear of this seller. They are miserable and petty. I ordered a book on xmas eve, paid for express shipping and was pleased to get an email saying that it would arrive by the 27th. Come the 28th it hadnt arrived and I couldn't find any tracking information, so I sent the following quick email
"Book was due to
Be delivered yesterday but no sign of it yet and I cant find any
Tracking information." I then recieved this reply
"Hello,
We received your order on Sat 24 Dec after the Post Offices closed.
Today is the first non-public holiday since 24th.
I had thought of sending a local scamp the 300 odd miles to your address
To deliver it personally but unfortunately the workhouse was closed over
Xmas so I couldn't find one.
But seriously - life is far too short for such nonsense from a customer
So I have cancelled your order and issued a refund.
Kind regards
Sarah Wood"
SO turns out it had never been shipped and thats someone missing out on a xmas present due to the seller being a miserable ****head
Abebooks is owned by Amazon, but does not follow the return policies of Amazon. You'll have to pay for return shipping for any damaged books you receive without reimbursement. I recommend using a different business or just using Amazon.
This site is a joke. I ordered a book from one of the seller's and he said it would take a little extra time to get the book and send it. He asked me for additional shipping charges, which I paid. I ended up paying over $200 for this book. I've tried multiple times to contact the seller with no success. I've reached out to the site support, and they told me that, since it's been over a month since the expected delivery date, I'm not entitled to any sort of refund. This is absurd, considering the seller told me that the original delivery date was being extended. I have to take some blame, as I was naive when sending extra money for shipping. Regardless of that, however, I still would've been out at least $175. I've never dealt with people as non responsive or unhelpful. I'll never get my money back. But I hope that, by at least leaving a review, others will take it as a warning. DO NOT use this site. It is purely a scam.
A purchased a book from Abebooks.com that was represented as being "New". Instead I received a used book in very poor condition that had been used in a library and my credit card was charged for the "new" book
It would be really nice if you could actually speak to a human. Calling them gets you directed to their website. When emailing them, they reply with canned responses that get you nowhere. I tried to order books, tax exempt but they will not respond. Even though I've jumped through all of their hoops, they have yet to refund the taxes they charged me. I've requested five times through email that they call me. They don't. Totally not worth the hassle.
I have to say that I will not use Abe ever again. I ordered a NEW book for $16.00 and paid $4.00 in shipping charges. The book came weeks later and was a mess, it was VERY USED, frayed, and yellowed. This was not a new book and had not been so for a very long time. After returning to the seller I am wait for a refund. Very disappointed Abe.
I ordered some books from eBay and updated my address. The seller refused to send my books to the correct address. Yet they did not have a issue taking the payment. Funny thing is six days later they just shipped the books but refused to let me provide them with the correct address or cancel the order. I had to reach out to eBay customer service to get it resolved. Sad thing is I will be never order from this company again. No customer service skills & lack of communication they blocked my messages.
I've ordered 3 books recently from abebooks. The first one came as described, without any problem. The other two came from the same place/seller (although they charged me twice for the shipping cost, when they should have just sent the two together as a single package, nvm) so both books were described as very good condition on the website. One was more like good condition at best but the third one wasn't even in fair condition. Ripped, the back cover folded and was dirty too. I wrote to the customer service asking what they can do about it? The answer was I have to contact the sellers or return it. One book cost about 3$ (the shipping was more expensive than the actual price) so it wouldn't be worth it. I told them this and that i purchased these books from the abebooks website and my payment also went to them, so i would expect their customer service to take care of my case. This was 7 days ago, no response from them since. I am never buying from this site again, it looks like if you order something you have 33% chance to get what you ordered.
First of all, I have been a long-time customer to AbeBooks, and have spent hundreds of dollars on their site. I requested a refund from AbeBooks for an item that was advertised as new. However, the book I got was used, with a damaged cover and writing inside. For some unknown reason, AbeBooks cancelled my return/refund request. Unlike Amazon, they no longer have a working customer service number so you can talk to a live representative. This is a real negative. Until this problem, I had no idea how much their rating had plunged. I wrote them back stating how can customers feel secure if you don't guarantee that items are in the condition as advertised on their site. Thus far, I've have gotten no reply. Don't say books are new, or "as new" and then send a book in "acceptable" condition, at best. This is very bad business. I am waiting to see if the seller responds, but the customer service at AbeBooks at this point leaves much to be desired, sad to say.
I ordered 4 of the same books and requested that I get a discount on shipping or ship them in separate packages as I would be paying for shipping 4 times which was over $10, I received 1 book and the other 3 were in the same package and it shows it was delivered, hmmmmm I never got them... ridiculous. What a scam.
I contacted the company by email numerous times and each one of their responses states "Thank you for reaching out to us about this issue, great customer service is our top priority. We were very concerned that you did not receive your order, and when we check the delivery confirmation number via INSERT CARRIER NAME, your order does show that it was delivered." A GREAT copy paste verbiage, this shows you DON'T care about your customers! Because I paid you more than the average person the smart thing would be to have someone sign for it. Oh but wait that didn't happen! And now I'm out over $35, It would be nice to get the books I paid for.
I thought I was buying my class text book from Abe Books. I was unaware that I was on their site buying from a 3rd party. When I received my book, it was not the book I ordered. I contacted Abe Books who them put me in contact with the seller. The seller stated you received the international version of the book and all the content is the same. Why?! I ordered this book because this is the book the professor assigned to this class. I can't say professor, please hold while I find similar contact within this book I received, because the pages you assigned don't match the pages in the book, and the content you are going over is not the exact same content that's in this book. On top of all this, I have to pay to ship back a book that I never requested. How is it possible that they can ship a similar boom and not the book I ordered, especially when my order has the ISBN I requested and doesn't match the book I received. This has been the worst experience ever and I always order my text books online. The book doesn't even look new. I'll never use this service again.
I ordered a boxed set of books from ABE Books & suffered a Cascade of Scams from their Merchant. They lied about sending the Item &; sent me a FAKE TRACKING STATEMENT. When all their lies failed, they had the Chutzpah to Complain about me- they *******@yelp reviews that tell the truth. The "arbitration" the lying Merchant put me through was the icing on the cake. ABE Books is the home of. Scammers.
They will write you back when convenient. They will not resolve the problem, but they will eventually write back to say they did not receive the other communications you sent every day until they call back.
I've only bought books from the book depository, all new. And they've all arrived on time and in great condition. The reason I use abebooks instead of the book depository site, is that a lot of times abebooks sells it cheaper for some reason, even with shipping. So I'd recommend buying from sellers you trust on this site.
Now, I HAVE got some good books on there. And some sellers are great. BUT! The majority of the sellers are making scams. For example, you buy a book for $10, with $10 shipping. The seller will "lose" the book, and relist it for $200! Then ask for an additional $80 shipping. This shipping with take 2 months, untracked. Tracking is an extra $100. Come on. Ebay can sell books. Amazon too. AbeBooks is owned by Amazon! So why are there so many problems? Customer service always sides with the seller!
This has happened DOZENS of times. I am uploading a recent one on here. Remember, I BOUGHT the book. Then they said it was out of stock. Then they found it the next day and sold it at a higher price!
I attempted to sell books on this site, but because it was a complicated (and expensive) process to set up the store, I asked them to close my account. They continued to charge my card even after the date they specified as the closing date of my account with them.
Ordered two books from two different sellers. One arrived to my country without my phone number on the parcel, I couldn't pick it up because I hadn't received the pickup pin-code which is supposed to be sent via SMS to my phone number.
The other book? Bookseller said they can't provide tracking information, simply never arrived, possibly was never shipped in the first place.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
