A Place for Mom is a scam as other reviews indicate it is all about referral money 120% which they charge facilities to place your loved one. They try to hide that information from the families. In our case the facility that we put our father had to pay these scam bags over $4000 in placement referral if we would have called the facility directly they would have saved us that amount of money by reduction in their fees.
SO DONT CALL MOMS PLACE

Hi Tony,

I sent this as a private message and haven't heard back, so I wanted to follow up here.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comment. We are sorry to hear that the referred community charged you the referral fee. The community is contractually prohibited from charging your family an extra amount in order to recoup the contractual amount they owe to us. Our services are free to families because the communities pay us a referral fee, and we make that clear in all of our communications and throughout our website. Would you please allow us to contact the community to see if we can rectify this situation? Would you please let us know which referred community inappropriately charged you this fee?

I stumbled across APFM on the internet and made the mistake of clicking to request more information. Whithin 3 minutes I got a call from Michelle S. And she was very nice on the phone, spending time learning about our situation. She then emailed me the names of four assisted living places. She also provided all of those organizations with my personal information. I have been receiving non-stop calls ever since. I called Michelle back and requested not to be contacted any more. I will contact these places directly if tand when I'm ready. Got still another call from Michelle today to "check in" and see if we are ready to tour any of the facilities. I told her I thought I was clear that I didn't want any more direct contact. Her response was that she interpreted that to mean I didn't want direct contact from the facilities. I said "so you think that I wanted to hear from you again?!" I told her to never call here again. Hopefully it's the last I'll hear from this high pressure "referral" service that is clearly only interested in getting paid their fees.

I just received a call from a care home that I placed my mom in approx 10 days ago. The owner advised me to find another place for my mother due to A Place For Mom charging an outrageous referral fee (120% + late charge).
I had actually found this place on my own by a friends referral, how ever my mistake was searching on the internet for an appointment, which somehow went to Place For Mom. I was never referred by A Place For Mom to this home!
This facility only cares for 4 people, and it is ridiculous they would charge such an outrageous charge for one phone call (>$7000). Especially since A Place For Mom never made a referral in the first place.
So I'm back to square 1, looking for a place that can care for my mother suffering from Alzheimer's.
The last thing I need is another referral!
As a Criminal Investigator, this reeks of Fraud. I will be in contact with the District Attorney on Monday.

Chelsia,
I read your response, which is a total misstatement of facts. Doing a web search for care homes does not eguate to a referral.
Also you wrote, "we are terminating our agreement with Alcor Guest House". In actuality Alcor terminated their agreement with your company last week.
Also, for info I spoke confidentially to another Memory Care Home of whom we have been #1 on a waiting list for over a year. One of the directors of that non-profit told me that the reason we are not called is due to being referred by your company and expense due to the referral.

Hi Rick,

We are sorry to hear that Alcor Guest Home is placing you in this unfortunate predicament.

Our records show that you reached out to us after finding our website alzheimerslocator.com on July 27,2014, in your search for your mother. We spoke with you and sent you a list of possible options on July 28, including Alcor Guest Home. After that time, our Advisors emailed you from time to time to check in on your search. Our Advisor spoke with you again on February 17,2015. You reached out to us again through our websites for assistance on September 24,2015, and we helped you again last month.

A Place for Mom is paid by our participating communities, which enables us to offer families a cost-free service. In our contract with Alcor Guest House, A Place for Mom prohibits Alcor Guest Home from passing through our fees to you, charging additional amounts because you used our services, or withholding discounts from you. We are sorry to hear that Alcor Guest Home is placing you in this unfortunate predicament and we are terminating our agreement with Alcor Guest House. We would like the opportunity to assist you again in your search, but will leave it up to you if you would like to communicate again with our Advisor or his Regional Manager. We hope the best for you and your mother.

I found that the prices that Place for Mom quote are much higher than when I called and asked. So, yes they do get a kick back and I think that is what is the real issue here. Instead of A Place for Mom going to the care place and evaluate whether it should be something they would recommend, they only recommend a place that will pay them to recommend them. For example, one place that was recommended, was not anyplace I would put my mom as it was on a busy street with a dirt lot for a back yard. Then the marketing phone calls began. Right after I gave A Place for Mom my house phone number, I began receiving marketing calls the following day which I never received before. A Place for Mom should change their strategy and do what the auto club does, they personally go to hotels and rate them to advise their clients. No one at A Place for Mom does that, so they could be sending you to a care place with a busy street and a dirt lot for a back yard and they don't know the difference. I would suggest A Place for Mom start considering going to the places they recommend instead of only recommending the places that will pay them. That is what is basically wrong with this whole company.

Hi Kiki,

I'm sorry to hear you are not satisfied with our service. We disclose on our website, in our advertisements, and in our communications that A Place for Mom is paid by our participating providers and communities. Because we are paid by our participating providers and communities, we are able to offer you a completely cost-free service.

And you are correct; we do refer only to the senior living providers in our network. Families are welcome to do their own research to explore communities and services outside of our network, and use that information to make educated comparisons. A friend directed me to this site after googling the name of a facility where I am administrator. This site comes up and says you can call them for pricing and availability of our facility. In an earlier review, they responded to a complaint saying,: "When a community joins our network, we develop in-depth, "insider" knowledge about their current availability, services and amenities, pricing, activities, special events, and other factors. From time to time, our Advisors visit the communities..."

No one from this site has ever visited our "community" and has NO knowledge (let alone "insider knowledge") about current availability, pricing, activities or anything else.

THIS SITE IS A TOTAL SCAM. BUYER BEWARE.

I am looking for a place for my dad and went to this website after hearing the extensive marketing. You have to put in your information before you can look at anything on the site. I swear I had just hit "enter" when my phone literally started ringing. I thought "no, it can't be" but yes, it was them, and they continually try to call multiple times a day for the past three days. Talk about ridiculously aggressive telemarketing. It really gives me the creeps.

My experience was very negative with this person. I am sure there are people who do a good job but they seem to be in other parts of the country. And that is why I did not give one star. The places that called me were not really suitable other than they had the bedroom configuration I asked for. The first one sounded very nice for assisted living or independent living but once dementia sets in MOVE. Ratings on line said their facility was terrible for Memory Care. The next one did not charge extra for extra care-very suspicious. One place the ratio was 1:8 for moderate to severe dementia care-too low.
I leared also from looking with my sisters that you cannot visit a new facility in Washington DC and apply it to an older Facility run by the same company in the Bay Area. Each facility has it's own Managers and flavor. One needs to visit in person. Also, I would narrow down and then revisit the facilities at different times of day, Morning and afternoon. Are the redidents dressed in the am and clean. Is ther an odor to the facility? Are there activities going on and is the staff interacting. Your Mother or Father will probably complain about moving no matter where they go so you have to be the detective and figure out if the place you chose is working out. Many very nice assisted living locations do not have good care for dementia patients.

Hi Carla,

I'm sorry to hear this and I'm sorry we could not help you.

We agree, in order to make an informed decision, we strongly encourage that you and your loved one(s) tour the communities that interest you. This allows you to see firsthand the environment you or your loved one might experience on a day-to-day basis. You'll have the opportunity to meet the staff, engage with other residents, taste the food and enjoy activities of interest. It's truly a necessary step before you make a decision.

I also think others searching for senior living will benefit from hearing your story and the communities you visited. If you have a few minutes, please leave a review on our site dedicated to consumer-generated ratings and reviews: https://www.senioradvisor.com/

A place for mom only cares about getting the commission on referrals, they do not check out facilities. It's simple- they contract with companies that pay them to do so... there is a reason why these companies pay for referrals- and a place for mom will say they are a good facility bc they benefit from it financially... when a company gives out referrals solely based on gaining money from the transaction you will never get honest answers or the best options that might be out there!

Thank you for your feedback and the opportunity to share how we monitor the senior living communities in our network, which is a multi-step process.
• When a community joins our network, we develop in-depth, "insider" knowledge about their current availability, services and amenities, pricing, activities, special events, and other factors. From time to time, our Advisors visit the communities in their local area to experience these features first hand, as well as build relationships with the local staff. In 2014, our Advisors spent 3,265 hours at our partner communities.
• We monitor every available state and provincial resource to insure that communities joining the APFM network of partnered communities are licensed.
• Twice a year we perform license reviews and violation audits of partnered communities in the United States.
• We direct families to available state websites and province websites that provide information regarding facility licensure, inspection summaries and violations.
Only the senior and their family know what’s best for their needs. We strongly encourage people to visit communities and see firsthand the environment you or your loved one might experience on a day-to-day basis. You'll have the opportunity to meet the staff, engage with other residents, taste the food and enjoy activities of interest. It's truly a necessary step before making a decision.

Contacted these folks- received an instant phone call-
Explained I needed a place for 3,000 a month for pretty rough situation.
Received an internet search copy of every place in DFW and none were less than 4,500 for the care needed.

Told L Hawley to go away in clear language.

The woman will not go away.

Annoying
May 16, 2015

I regret ever initiating contact with this company! My wife's mother is at a stage in life where she needs 24/7 monitoring. She is healthy but exhibits signs of dementia. I placed a call to 'A Place for Mom' because I live out of state and it seemed like a good starting point. What my wife and I didn't know was my wife's sister had already begun the process of looking for a suitable home and had narrowed it down to two locations. My wife's sister performed the search WITHOUT any input, advise, or contact with 'A Place for Mom' or my wife's input. When 'A Place for Mom' called my wife back, she informed them that her sister had already found a place for their mother. That's when the REPEATED phone calls and emails began. My wife informed them that the home her sister selected wasn't even on the list 'A Place for Mom' recommended. That didn't matter, the calls continued. It's been well over a year and this Saturday morning I received another call from *******796 asking my wife to call Ashley Coleman at 760-530-XXXX. When I asked my wife about this she told me the story of how 'A Place for Mom' wanted to know where her mother was placed so they can call the home and try to get payment from them even though she didn't get placed there using their service. I've blocked the phone number, and setup email filters - hopefully contact will end before I'm in need of an assisted living home.

You also bring up a good point about doing your own research. Yes, you can do your own searches online, and we encourage families to research and educate themselves as much as possible on the process and their options. Our local Senior Living Advisors learn your needs, which helps narrow your search so you don’t have to look through thousands of listings online. Your Advisor will ask questions to get an understanding of your personal situation and will then identify and provide a list of the providers and/or communities from our network that meet your care needs and budget.

I will say they called a lot but never gave me any real help just a list of places I could have gotten on the internet. I initially called for my Mom but place my Dad first in a home. As soon as they found out about my Dad they were off to get their commission and I never heard from them again. This is a work from home scam. They are dealing with people on their way to assisted living anyway but have an agreement with the homes to pay a commission if they can show they talked to them first.

I recently jumped through all the hoops of getting some info for assisted living for my mother in N. C. The folks at A Place For Mom took almost a week to respond to my inquiry and after I shared with them the names of places I had already found on my own they immediately sent me an Email detailing these same places. To make matters worse, when I informed them that I had already contracted with one of these facilities, they wanted their "Cut". It's all about the $$$. When asked to speak with a supervisor, I was placed on hold then given off to voice mail and the calls from other facilities in a 50 mile radius keep coming on a daily basis. Buyer Beware!

I an a business that has listed my company with A Place For Mom. Some of you have hit the head on the nail with your comments. For Example:
1. No one from Aplaceformom has ever come to view my facility. They have no Idea about my place other than what I have on my website.
2. If you get information from another source such as, the Department of Aging, Office of Health Care Quality, the representatives does not get commission for you and although you are listed on their site, they may have sent you leads, they will tell you lies about the business in an effort to steer you away from them. Especially Ms. Dorfman. She has done this to me and another owner. She told a prospect that I was poorly raked and when I called her on int and asked her where, as I was a very new business, she stated she did not see my business on a bad site and attempted to skipped the subject. I asked her why she would attempt to harm my business in that way and she attempted to divert me by stating "she would love to see my facility." I reported her only to find out at a networking meeting, she did the same thing to another facility and is still there. So on some level, the executive must accept this type of behavior.
3. They do not take the information from the customer and try to line it up with the business. Thus, it makes you and the client waste time if they are looking for a place that is in a 1800 to 2500 range and you are at 3000 - 5000 range. It puts you in a bad position especially when you want to help everyone.
4. They have the opportunity to be a blessing to others, I contacted a potential client sent to me and he was not looking for a facility, he was looking for someone to live-in with his dad. He was so sick of the calls and all I could do was apologize.

I have worked with some awesome representatives and thus the reason I have not asked that my facility be removed. But you must be aware as APlaceForMom is not giving you the full picture. I hope this review helps someone.

You are NOT honest that you charge the residential homes an EXTREMELY LARGE FEE for the referral for a place that you have NOT previewed. FRAUDULENT REPRESENTATION just so you can get a fee from the homes. MORE than the monthly rent that a family pays.

Hi Margaret,

Thank you for your feedback. A Place for Mom is paid by our participating providers and communities, which enables us to offer families a cost-free service with no hidden fees.

Unfortunately, Americans are in a crisis when it comes to senior care. Senior living is expensive and it’s usually one of the most difficult decisions a family has to make. To help educate families on the costs associated with care, we created the Senior Care Price Index http://www.aplaceformom.com/senior-living-price-index which is a great resource to learn more about the costs associated with senior living.

Federal law prevents us from referring families directly to senior housing communities if the family desires to use public funds like Medicaid for housing costs. We have compiled tools to assist families with conducting their own independent search for their public funding needs. There are government resources available to help with the search for options. A few are listed below:

• Administration on Aging (www.aoa.gov): The “Elders and Families” section of the AoA is particularly useful for accessing links to information regarding state and local services for older adults and their families; public and private benefits programs; Medicare; and long-term care planning
• Eldercare.gov (www.eldercare.gov): This helpful website offers fact sheets, booklets and links to federal websites.
• U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (www.hud.gov/): Here you can find information on affordable housing for seniors and rental assistance, among other things.
• The National Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org): Provides a list of federal and state assistance programs.
• Department of Veterans Affairs (www.va.gov): Veteran’s benefits provide those who have served their country (some benefits extend to their spouses as well) financial assistance during their retirement years. To learn if you are eligible, visit this website and review the information under “Veteran Services.”
• Disability.gov (www.disabilityinfo.gov): A comprehensive guide on disability programs and services, including Social Security benefits and affordable, accessible housing. The website provides links to more than 14,000 resources from federal, state and local government agencies; academic institutions; and nonprofit organizations.

We also disclose on our website, in our advertisements, and in our communications that A Place for Mom is paid by our participating providers and communities. Because we are paid by our participating providers and communities, we are able to offer you a completely cost-free service. Families are welcome to do their own research to explore communities and services outside of our network, and use that information to make educated comparisons.

DO NOT CALL THIS PLACE FOR HELP.

I did in a desperate moment searching for help with a parent with worsening Alzheimer's. I entered some info into their website and my Phone range before my fingers left the mouse with an Agent from a place for mom was on the other end. That should have been a warning signal to me but as mentioned, I was desperate. She seemed to be the resource I was looking for. NOT!
Instead of help, what I received was 5-10 phone calls a day from facilities referred by a place for mom with sales calls. None of them are even remotely close to the what I had explained to a place for mom my loved one needed in a facility. After finding a place on my own, a place for mom agent calle and emails doubled looking for more detailed information on his placement. 10 MONTHS LATER, I still get these calls (and you should see the emails) despite my repeated request to stop. At the most trying time of my 52 years on this earth, A place for mom has proved to be nothing but a pack of hyenas smelling blood and looking for a meal.

Beware!
October 21, 2014

Beware! We called this service to help find a place for an elderly family member. They were very agressive with asking for financial info, assets etc. The more research I do on them the more they seem like they are after peoples money. Its a common practice to be the "caregiver" for an elderly person and then get control of their finances and end up taking all their money so beware.

This place was a real blessing for us. My mother-in-law and her sister had been living in their home for many years. But now that they're almost 90, it got to the point that they really needed to move to a retirement community. But we didn't know one from another and there are too many in our area to figure out. I had spent hours and hours online and then decided to try A Place for Mom. A godsend! I was contacted by their local rep, Bev Stricklin, and told her how much we had and she went to work. She gave us 3 places to start with and then went from there. For each, she gave us the monthly cost and the contact info of the facility's representative. After each visit she called me and discussed each experience so that she could refine her recommendations. After just three visits, we had it whittled down to a favorite and she kept in touch with us throughout the process of finalizing everything. She communicated to the rep with any concerns we had as well. Ultimately we got the perfect spot for the two sisters. They love the place and I must say we would have never found the right place without the help of Bev!

Thank you, thank you! Bev!
