Do NOT use this website to find competent contractors! It's a waste of time and money!
We needed major construction done at our property including demolition, foundation, framing, electrical, mechanical, etc. We decided to use BuildZoom to help us find a creditable, licensed contractor. We were assigned a "Customer Success" representative at BuildZoom and shared our project details and architecture plans with her. She then connected us (via cc'ed email) to 3 local contractors, whom she claimed were "qualified" to complete the work. We meet all three of them at the property, saw their portfolios, and got estimates. They all seemed knowledgable (on the surface), and BuildZoom claimed to have vetted them, so we picked one and started the project.
It was a TOTAL DISASTER! The contractor took $*******s from us and barely came to the property, and the tiny amount of work that his subcontractors did complete wasn't even to code. In the end, we had to hire another general contractor to fix all of the mistakes and damage that BuildZoom's contractor caused. We are now in pre-litigation with that contractor to get back (any) of the money that was taken from us.
I will NEVER EVER EVER us BuildZoom again to find a qualified contractor. They clearly do NOT vet their recommendations! This is the worst service I have ever used. Do NOT waste your time with BuildZoom. You WILL regret it!
We signed up for the premium service. It was a waste of time and money. Contractors also inflate their price when working through Buildzoom.
Buildzoom introduced us to 3 contractors. Each contractor quoted us around $700-900k to build our home. Buildzoom was supposed to receive a breakdown by line and compare for the construction of our home from each contractor. The bids we received from buildzoom were then inflated to $1.2 to $1.7 million from the same contractors. We never received any line amounts or a justification for this inflated price. Buildzoom charged us $7000 for their services despite giving us no new information and higher costing bids.
Hi Rob,
We can assure you that BuildZoom or the contractors we work with don’t inflate prices. Our Premium team collects and reviews bids that contractors submit thoroughly to ensure they are accurate and well represented.
It’s not uncommon when a contractor does an initial walkthrough of the property, they’ll give an off-hand verbal estimate, however when it comes down to developing the bid and they price out the cost of materials, labor, and subcontractors it ends up being higher than they initially thought.
To clarify our process — the first bids we receive from contractors are usually very high-level and not broken down by line items. We narrow down our choices with the property owner, then go through rounds of revisions with the chosen contractors and that’s when we start to receive bids broken down by lines. In your case specifically, you found and introduced an outside contractor before we had the opportunity to go through iterations.
Although you hired an outside contractor, as part of the Premium service we offered to review their contract before signing to ensure it was well represented, which you agreed to and at no additional cost we conducted a contract review, which is something we don’t typically do if a contractor is found outside of our service.
We’re sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with the Premium service and wish you the best with your hire.
We have an old house and needed a new trapdoor with ladder installed to make it possible to do the work of putting a heat pump and HVAC system in our attic. I was dreading what I was thinking could be a long search to find an available contractor and was very happy to find that I could list the job with BuildZoom.com. Within 24 hours several of their vetted contractors contacted me and set up appointments to come to the house to give us bids on the work involved. The job is now being done within the week of our posting.
My 50 year old free-standing garage was in need of rehabilitation-- not a big job, but not small either., plus I wanted to create a workroom within the garage. BuildZoom was instrumental in helping me find a reputable construction company. I went with Construction Plus. They did a great job. It all worked out very well.
I had an electrical issue after the recent freeze in Austin TX. The city's website pointed me to BuildZoom in order to get bids for the repairs. My assigned consultant was very helpful, and expecially proactive in keeping up to speed on the progress of getting the needed work done. Definitely recommended.
They make your project run smooth every step of the way, from pre screening potential contractors to following up after work is complete.
Bonafied did and excellent job for me and would call them back for more when needed. New roof and transplanted a five year old apple tree. Highly recommend.
This is a great website for small or any businesses to grow, develop and help customers to reach out them with this.
They prescreen potential contractors vetting out irrelevant ones, process is smooth and they pay attention to your concerns and address them.we recommend them!
I had T&L Renovations give me an estimate to have a deck built and they were polite and did an amazing job. Great quality of work and on time. I highly recommend this contractor for all your building needs. Look them up they are wonderful and I'm having them back to do more work for me in the future.
I have used and will continue to use several contractors listed on BuildZoom for my construction and remodel projects. Quality contractors.
I am remodeling an out of state property and was looking for help to find a reputable contractor. My original expectation was to obtain some bids from recommended businesses and identify the best option, myself. After speaking with BuildZoom's sales associate, Sean, who informed me about the benefits of their premium service, I'm so happy I chose to utilize it.
I was assigned a Project Manager and Assistant PM, both of whom were a delight to work with, very responsive and always well prepared for our meetings. My APM, Jake, did a fabulous job of creating a work plan, meeting all due dates and was very flexible when I required changes. He scheduled all meetings with the contractors at my convenience and ensured we received bids in a timely manner.
It was clear that I really needed the expertise of my PM, Alex, when we received 3 bids with a price range of $78K. He was extremely knowledgeable in all technical aspects of the project and able to answer all questions I had regarding details of the bids. He successfully leveled the bids, made pertinent inquiries of each contractor to clarify their proposed work and thoroughly explained the contract details.
Both Jake and Alex contributed significantly to identification of the ideal contractor, negotiated more reasonable terms to the payment schedule and made excellent suggestions for moving forward successfully. This process was definitely much easier with BuildZoom's premium service and the help of these gentlemen than it would have been alone, even if I was local.

I have been a part of over a dozen renovations and this group is by far the most unprofessional and a group of scam artists. They were paid for services, agreed to details in writing and verbally and then had amnesia what they agreed to and walked off the job. Then proceeded to send blackmail texts: the first was good luck finding anyone to finish for under $10,000, followed by "in order to finish the job they been paid for I'd have to give them $5000 case, $2000 more for scope of work and $3000 for "wasting their time"…. Marc is a fast talker and says the right things and then he will run off with your money and leave a mess for you to clean up!
Hi Lisa,
We are sorry to hear about your experience with Marc Costanzo Construction. We’d like to clarify that BuildZoom is not associated with Marc Costanzo Construction, or any contractors. We assist property owners with finding contractors in their local area and act as an owner's rep to help them validate contractors and get through the pre-construction process, however we don’t have our own network of contractors. We also partner with over 2000 building departments and contractor license boards across the United States to manage a database of active contractors on our website.
I see that you have provided a review on their BuildZoom profile, so thank you for doing that! It is currently undergoing our verification process, and once approved, it will be posted publicly in the next couple of days. If you’re in need of finding a high quality contractor in your area, we’re happy to help you! We also recommend looking to see if they have their own SiteJabber profile and leaving a review on their profile — this review looks to be specific to them and their business, we’re unsure why it was posted to our BuildZoom profile. If you used BuildZoom, we’d love to hear feedback specific to your experience with our Project Consultants!
If you have any questions, please reach out to us at customersupport@buildzoom.com.
We used Build zoom to do some unanticipated fixes to our home, primarily outside. They were very responsive and came in at budget. Their work was very professional and blended in seamlessly with our exterior. Additional work was done to repair decking and other repairs, again without a long wait and seamless coordination of tasks/tradespeople.
While it used to be difficult to find a reliable contractor for repairs to your home, I recently needed a handyman to do repairs both the interior interior & exterior of my home in Framingham Massachusetts, the chosen contractor Chis Lipski was excellent & can't imagine that I could have had such a positive experience without using Build Zoom.
We had a major pipe burst from the freeze that damaged 75% of our Home
BH Construction Handled all of the work needed to get us back into our home and they even helped with the Insurance Claim process.
Great workmanship and will definitely use them on future projects.
I have hired to do 2 jobs for me. The first was to put a railing on the cellar stairs of rhe house I was selling, he completed the project quickly and it came out better than I expected. I hired him again to build a wall and add a door to rooms in the 200 year old farm house, again his attention to detail was perfect, he reused some of the old boards to finish off the door, it looks like it was always there. Keith does excellent work for a very fair price.
I will never recommend to anyone or ever use this website and I urge everyone to stay away. Please do your research and stay away from this awful website.
If you are a contractor run dont walk away from this site. They use Phishing tactics to find false information about companies only to get you to "Claim your profile" How can this company protect the consumer if they cannot be honest themselves. They have a review about my company never posted anywhere or on their site and refuse to remove. I have asked kindly and sadly it has come to my now having to file complaints with every public private entity I can to protect my own companies image.
Hi Jonathan,
We understand your concern regarding your company's profile on BuildZoom. As for this specific situation, your request has been resolved and the review is no longer on your profile. BuildZoom partners with over 2,000 building departments and contractor license boards across the United States to maintain a database of almost 4 million contractors. Similarly, we receive permit data from city or county building departments.
What Yelp is to restaurants and small businesses, BuildZoom is for contractors and architects. It’s a place where property owners can search our database to find a local contractor, and to leave reviews regarding their experience. They can also contact our Project Consultants if they want help finding a local contractor.
As it goes for you as a contractor, you can claim your BuildZoom profile and clean it up. We understand that with our automated data processing of the building department information (and publicly available data online), there could be missing information or inaccuracies. When a contractor claims their profile, they can make corrections and updates to their information in order to validify it is a real company. Additionally, contractors can dispute any reviews they receive on BuildZoom if they believe the review is falsified - they can do that after they claim their profile, log in to their account, and submit a dispute through the dispute portal.
We do have a review integrity team and we require that the person leaving the review provide contact information and some personal info to verify that it’s a real person leaving the review, and not a malicious character or some sort of bot that’s trying to post erroneous reviews on contractors.
It’s not uncommon to find other contractors with similar or exact name matches as your own company. We capture the unique License ID number provided to us by the license boards to differentiate between contractors.
You can also always contact us at support@buildzoom.com and we’re always happy to help you with anything. It’s equally important to us to service our contractors as it is to service our property owners.
Answer: Hi Marsha! Once logged into your BuildZoom account, navigate to your review, and find the three dots in the top right corner of the review box. Click on those three dots and you should have the option to either delete or edit the review from there. I hope this helps!
Answer: Hi James, Thank you for reaching out. I am a member of the customer relations team with BuildZoom. Could you please clarify your question so I can do my best to assist you?
Answer: Hi Helen, Thank you for reaching out! It looks like your review has been approved and posted to DL Bandy's profile (https://www.buildzoom.com/contractor/dl-bandy). In some cases, it can take up to a week to fully update on their BuildZoom profile. However, I can assure you that it has been approved.
Answer: Hello William, Dalinghaus Construction has a claimed BuildZoom profile here: https://www.buildzoom.com/contractor/dalinghaus-construction-inc-ca You'll see that they have a BuildZoom Score of 125, which is in the top 99th percentile in California. Check out their full profile for more info!
Answer: Hello William! It looks like there are a few Dalinghaus construction companies across the United States. What state and city were you looking to find Dalinghaus construction's score?
Answer: Not True...stay away from them. Check out the lawsuits and complaints about BZ. Sounds like a scam.
Answer: Hello Toni! If you are looking for reviews on this contractor, you can view their BuildZoom profile here: https://www.buildzoom.com/contractor/jackson-contracting-llc-eatontown-nj We do want to point out that this contractor has not claimed their BuildZoom profile, they've been listed on our website based on publicly available information and reviews were left by customers who may or may not have found them through BuildZoom. We are not affiliated with any of the contractors found on our platform and we encourage you to do additional research on a contractor by looking up additional reviews on multiple platforms (Yelp, BBB, Google etc.)
Hi Paul,
We are very sorry to hear about your experience with a contractor you found on BuildZoom. Contractors on buildzoom.com are not employees nor affiliates of BuildZoom. Contractors on our website do not pay us a subscription to be a part of our marketplace, they only pay us a referral fee for jobs that they win. We are not a regulator and remain a neutral party in post-hire disputes.
We partner with over 2000 building departments and contractor boards across the US to maintain records of over 3.8 million contractors. Unfortunately it’s not feasible for us to run background checks on all 3.8 million licensed contractors, especially since they are not employed or affiliated directly with BuildZoom. Think of BuildZoom like Yelp but for local contractors — Yelp maintains a large database of Restaurants, we maintain a large database of contractors and offer services to help source local contractors, and a Premium Service that helps compare and review bids & contracts.
If and when we discover that a contractor is conducting themselves in a manner that’s bad, we do suspend or ban them from our website.
As far as your situation, here are some actions you can take (while it looks as if you have already take some of action):
-File a formal complaint to your State Attorney General
-Reach out to your State.gov's Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, where their license is listed and open up a complaint - request for the contractor to be investigated
-Simultaneously, ask for their contractor's bond information (if you don't have it already) to file a formal claim against their bond, which would compensate you for misperformance
-Review the requirements for your State’s Recovery Fund (if they have one)
-If you would like, leave a review on their BuildZoom profile so that others are aware of your experience (we've come to learn that some regulators will visit our site during their own research)
Again, we are very sorry that you encountered this situation and we hope you’re able to figure something out. If you need help researching any of the above options in your state, reach out to us at customersupport@buildzoom.com.
