Do NOT pay for a membership here! They will put you on autopsy even after it ends. Customer service seems like the site owner's family and is very slow.
CrunchyRoll started out charging people for subtitled animation that had NO licenses in the US and that had been subtitled BY FREE by fans and that could be found for free elsewhere. Crunchyroll had absolutely no business profiting for this.
Crunchyroll is a great service IN THEORY but in practice stick to YouTube, NetFlix or watch for free and mute the commercials.
I cancelled my account over a year ago. I am STILL being charged periodically. Nothing they "done" has had any effect on this reductions, and I am going to need to CANCEL my credit card to stop the charges.
Crunchyroll is a nice Streaming platform itself, no problems BUT 40% of the Animes i wanna watch are blocked, because of missing licenses.
I mean maybe i dont know enough to discuss about licenses but i pay this site so i can watch Anime and then i cant even watch my favorites?
So I signed up for their free trial but couldn't watch anything anyway because of my slow internet connection and their videos not buffering much.
So, like one might assume, if you're on a free trial, you get some kind of request to go premium or stop. Not with Crunchyroll though, they just assume that you want premium service.
An assumption that has forever tarnished their name with me - I might have returned to their site later on when I get a better internet service but now I'd rather tell everyone I can to avoid them at all costs.
I've opened a dispute at PayPal for Crunchyroll's actions. Stay away from Crunchyroll at all costs and never give them your payment information, even if it's for a free trial.
I was a CrunchyRoll subscriber for quite some time until a few months ago the video quality on their website took quite the nosedive. They have since then made promises to improve the video quality, but it was quite apparent that the decision was made to save bandwidth. All other subscription services have a better quality stream. Ended up cancelling the service altogether since it really felt like they were trying to do everything they could to make their customers leave. It was only after people actually started to leave that they even attempted to address the issue. Not sure if the video quality has improved since then since I am not subscribed anymore to the service. I get my content through other means (Funimation, Netflix, etc.).
Won't let you cancel your premium membership through their broken website. Customer service is non existent.
I watched the intro and got 30 seconds in bam 4-30second commercial asap then about 5 minutes in another commercial this time i tab over to a new tab it new i wasnt watching the commercial and kept stopping it at the end and replayed it till i stayed on the same page a little pathetic if you ask me no thanks im stopping now before it gets worse your no better then hulu i pay and im still forced to watch commercial really?!?! Are you retarted no thank ill be glad to pay netflixs.
There is no site like Crunchy Roll. You can watch unlimited anime on all devices, red unlimited manga and get deals on figures and other cool things on their store. Amazing customer service. I've had billing problems and they gave me a free month premium! Even though I had previously had 2 free trials.
The anime itself is great. Great selection in my opinion. But the service sucks horribly. I usually have to keep pressing retry over and over again, maybe it'll work, but usually no. It's annoying especially when I'm zoned in on a show and it messes up. Ugh... very disappointed!
So I took their 1 month free premium membership offer. They have a few good anime shows. The rest is pretty obscure.
The cancellation process is a joke though. Oh sure there is a cancellation form. You get a confirmation email. But they still keep drawing money! I have mailed their customer service. But I just get canned responses like so many others. I had to cancel my card.
They do not have a wide variety of anime as they would have you believe. They certainly do not have barely any of the mainstream anime. 99% of their shows are indie garbage that you can only play in japanese.
I have been a premium member for years, the play back has recently gotten really really bad, I reached out to customer service and they told me the would escalate the issue and just keep sending me a link to the FAQ page, its been a month, still no help.
First off for all the little $#*! rating it a 1 star saying there is no way to cancel it you sure you didn't $#*!ing go to www.crunchyroll.com and try to cancel there on did your dumass tried to cancel by email or a scam website like how stupid are you I tried the 7 day trial and canceled it in 6 days so idk how your dumasses couldn't since I liked it I just got the membership
Like most other commenters, I fell for the two week free premium, then discovered its impossible to cancel. The website would mysteriously tell me "page not found" when trying to cancel. Emails when unanswered. After sending a particularly threatening email, they refunded me only three months of the payments (when I asked for the past 6 months at minimum, for over a year of them taking my money unauthorized). Their response was "I've tried helping you out to the best of my ability. Netflix has a no refund policy. I was able to get you 3 charges refunded plus 90 days of Premium service. I hope I have been able to assist you." Really unprofessional of them to try and shoot down Netflix (which i never brought up) to boost their egos. I went through paypal to get the rest of my money back. Everyone beware.
I signed up for the two week trial to watch anime. After noticing they didn't have the shows I wanted I cancelled my trial. However, behind my back they have been taking £4.99 a month despite my cancellation, I have attempted to cancel 4 or 5 times with no prevail. Had to then contact PayPal and file dispute. Do not go premium unless you want an infinite membership or know how to cancel payments on your end.
My friend also purchased a figure from their site who crunchy roll then signed them up for the two week trial which you cannot cancel. Same problems on their end. Scam site.
The site is nice but I would never do business with them again.
If you want to cancel your membership, you can "cancel your membership immediately" or "cancel recurring payments." These result in reassuring messages saying your payments have been cancelled. However, this is a lie. Your payments will actually continue indefinitely. You have to cancel at the paypal level. Terrible business practice. I hope they fail.
Can't say I like the business practice. The ONLY reasons I haven't gotten a full membership from them are
1. The buffer rate: I'm a free member, but when I go to the forums to speak with their (often quickly responding) staff, I see that Premium members have the same problem. So the commercials aren't such a big deal to me.
2. Hidden fees. I'm not sure if this is still going on, but I once purchased something from them and found myself automatically enrolled on their 2-week free trial. That free trial doesn't cancel itself -- Crunchyroll began to deduct the monthly viewership fee from my account. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't just changed jobs and therefore my direct deposit bank; I could have been sunk with some serious fees if they'd drawn my account down to zero. Thankfully, I've got a Mum I don't mind opening my mail (we're cool like that) and she spotted the account activity. I had to tell my bank that I was receiving an unwanted service, and had them contact the company to let them know they would no longer be paid from my account. I keep a MUCH closer eye on my finances now.
I only watch anime once a month, in order to pace myself. Crunchyroll would be a fantastic service if only the technical issues were fixed -- I'd definitely buy, even if that meant I have to eventually fight to get my account shut down. Oh, and that brings me to
3. Account Shutdown Refusal: This was not my experience. However, I would never want it to be. I usually take reviews with a grain of salt, so to speak, but Crunchyroll seems to have a slight problem with letting go of other people's money. As in, on their forum, there are entire threads dedicated to the sole purpose of getting accounts canceled. Directions like that should be easy to find, but I've seen "How do I shut down my account?" and "How do I cancel my membership?" and "I've canceled my membership, but I'm still being charged!" just enough to keep me uncomfortable.
A TON of potential is there, though. I definitely won't say they're through.
I signed up for premium during the japancrate promotion. Crunchyroll sent me my code for a free month of Japancrate. The code never worked. I contacted Japancrate and they said they would take care of it with crunchyroll. After 3 months of emails to both Japancrate and crunchyroll they both tell me they can't help me. Japancrate said crunchyroll gave out duplicate codes to many people and failed to give them enough codes to make up for it. Japancrate offered free samples and coupons to make up for it. Crunchyroll said it's been too long and they aren't going to honour the promotion and I can go ahead and cancel my membership. They had no interest in customer service and I feel intentionally decieved customers with a promotion they had no intention in honoring.
This would be a great website if they actually had more good anime. Every season, they are missing some of the best anime, like Arlsan Senki, Psycho-Pass, Elfen Leid, Shingeki no Bahamut, Dimension W, Overlord, Death Parade, Mirai Nikki, Zankyou no Terror, Tokyo Ghoul, and my personal favorite: One-Punch Man.
It gets two stars because it gives you a free trial, enough time to figure out it's garbage without spending money on it.
It would be an amazing site if I did not get so frustrated that it pauses all the time. It is the most annoying when I do not have the premium membership, but even with it it can be annoying to have the video stop at a really climatic part and you have to refresh the page 3-4 times or sometimes even more. The fact that they get the rights to the shows, the fact that they are able to get it translated so fast from Japan and the fact that they are just as excited about the content as we are makes for a really cool company. However, for all of that behind them you would think that after years of constant complaints about videos stopping they would try and find a solution. I respect their business, but I would not be able to wholeheartedly recommend them after some of the heartache and frustration this one main issue has caused. I have even considered writing down all the videos in my queue and logging off indefinitely until they get this fixed. I would not mind so much if the video just took a long time to 'buffer', but this is something that sometimes ruins the enjoyment of viewing a great show. The fact that it pauses and will not load unless you refresh and the fact that you are not able to go skip around on the video timeline without the chance of it pausing makes the whole experience frustrating enough to stop watching it on their site. Once they get that fixed, then I would give them 4-5 stars. It is really a big issue for anyone who wants to relax and watch something on their site because sometimes it is anything but.
Answer: Crunchyroll engineered a scam. If you payed using paypal, you have to cancel through paypal. It's ridiculous.
