The company's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning its subscription model and customer service. Many users report unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling subscriptions, and a lack of responsive support, leading to perceptions of deceptive practices. While some customers acknowledge the potential value of the service for avid readers, these positives are overshadowed by frustrations with the platform's functionality and the quality of customer interactions. Overall, the feedback indicates a pressing need for improved communication and more transparent billing practices to restore customer trust.

I have contacted Scribd twice using their help system regarding an issue with my account. Two weeks have gone by with no update or response from them. They had the nerve to close my one ticket with no resolve or comment.
Stay away from this website. A bunch of crooks that will run themselves out of business.
I innocently signed up for the app WITH ABSOLUTELY NO NOTICE THEY WOULD CHARGE A RIDICULOUS FEE OF $8.99 a month! I hope with all my heart that cancelling it today through ITunes will work.
Hi there! We try to make the recurring monthly subscription charge very clear on our sign up pages and we apologize if it was not. You can absolutely cancel through iTunes, and iTunes Support (https://support.apple.com/itunes) can assist you further if you need. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I renewd my sub to Scribd in Sept " 16. Last year it functioned well. This month December it deteriorates rapidly.,,
Download a book then try to open it later and the site freezes.
Try download a new book and the site is frozen.
I dont think Scribd could get worse

I am also a victim of their fraud.
I have cancelled the membership within 30 day free trial period. I was told by scribd that if you cancel within this period, no charges will be made. I have given them the transaction number and my email address. They say that the email address does not exist and asking tonnes of information about my account which I now fear to share details with them. I will wait for a couple more days and then close my bank account as I cannot see them debiting my account every month. Never expected this from you, Scribd. The request number is *******
Hi Ashish! We've located your subscribed account and have replied to your support ticket 1248254 with more information regarding your refund. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Scribd makes you go through a number of pages to cancel your membership, many of which do not make it clear that you haven't cancelled yet (except the penultimate non-cancellation page, which does warn you that you have not cancelled yet). I'm glad my credit card was cancelled; otherwise their charges may have gone unnoticed for months, and that's certainly something they want to happen. AVOID
I've been trying to contact Scribd for about a month now about charges that have dated back to 2014. It's my fault for just noticing, but I assumed once I canceled my account that the charges would stop. I was wrong and I'm paying for it now (literally). When I first complained, they refunded my account $8.99. Three days later, they charged me again. When I tried to get in contact with them again about the charges, they ignored me. Still waiting to hear back.
Hi Emma, Our support manager has replied to your ticket with your refund information. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Scribd is a fraud, first of, they never have the books i want to read. SEcondly i got debited for $8.99 after deleting my accoun. I have sent them 4 emails, messages on twitter and 0 response, maybe its because I live in the 3rd world but this is a bull$#*! company.
Hi Damilola, I can see that our support representative Donni has replied to you with further information as to why you were charged on your active subscription, and she has refunded you. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
After years with scribd, I cancelled and will never return. Years ago, Scribd had a wonderful book plan. The rules changed dramatically over the last year (2016). What I signed up for is NOT what Scribd delivers. It went from unlimited and the ability to read books offline to only three books each month, only available to read on the internet. No internet means no book access.
I get a much better deal at my county library for FREE. The selection is also broader at the library. The public library loans e-books and audio books and I may borrow up to ten or more (enki and larger city libraries allow far more book downloads) at a time. And I can read them OFFLINE. Scribd cannot match this service even though they charge about ten dollars each month. Don't bother with Scribd.
I have never heard of this company and keep getting chargesome on my credit card for $8.99. Not once, but multiple charges in this amount. My credit card company would flag them as suspicious, reissue me a new card with a new card number but somehow they get my new number and recharge my card. I suspect they have some kind of mining software that collects credit card numbers and charges them hoping the owner doesn't check their statement. This company is a complete SCAM.
Hi Cynthia! We've just replied to your support ticket requesting more information in order to locate the charges in our system. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
First off, I seem to be in the same boat as many other people here. I have never even heard of this site before yet on my past two credit card statements was charged $8.99 twice each month. I have absolutely no account with them and when I tried to contact them there is only an email. I would just like to talk on the phone with a person to be refunded. I also read other reviews on here and it seems they don't respond on emails so that is why I'm reviewing here. It seems that they are more worried about bad reviews rather than actual customer support so I'm hoping posting here will get my issue resolved.
Hi Morgan! Our Support Rep Katy replied to your ticket on Thursday requesting more information in order to locate the charges in our system. Once you send that requested information we can get started on resolving the issue. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I used to love Scribd, but no more. I have no issue with uploading a document, to download a document, but even if document is accepted I never get to download, always see spinning ball on page until I give up. Do you think I would ever subscribe when Scribd is not even honest about downloading? Why would I trust Scribd with money?
Quit ripping people off! My sister has been overcharged for more than two years by your service you con artists!
I got an account the beginning of September to see one book, and then cancelled later in the month. I was just billed $12.27CAD this October, but when I wrote to them about the issue, I got an immediate helpful reply on the same day. They are refunding my money, and said my account will remain active for free the rest of October anyways. So despite the cancellation problem I had, I have to say they do have excellent customer service, which matters a lot to me.
In around June, I signed up for what Scribd clearly advertised as a "free 30-day trial". I downloaded only one file, a math answer key, and paused my account, an option Scribd provides to (according to them) allow you to keep your account without having to remove the subscription while not getting charged. They state that while in this mode, you cannot download files until you resume your regular account, but you will also not be charged. I don't understand all of Scribd's scam-like false advertisement as I am still currently being charged 8.99 per month even though I HAVE DELETED MY ACCOUNT OVER A MONTH AGO. All I can advice you is to NOT SUBSCRIBE FOR SCRIBD IN THE FIRST PLACE.
I use to love Scribd! I could download as many books that I wanted. I felt like it was like Netflix only with books, but now it's telling me how many books I can download. If I am paying $8.99 a month I should be able to have unlimited access. I am going back to Kindle Unlimited and pay the extra $1.00
I had never even heard of Scribd before an $8.99 charge from them showed up on my credit card statement last week. I emailed them right away, only got an auto-response that I would hear back from them in 24 hours - then nothing. I emailed again a few days later, same thing as before. I have now FB messaged them, hopefully that will get through. I have never used their service before, and after this I am sure I never will. I don't know how they got my CC info (I know it wasn't stolen by an ID thief because who would steal a credit card to get a Scribd subscription?). I just want them to reverse the charge and ensure that it does not happen again. So frustrating.
Hi Gina! It looks like our support representative April recently sent you a reply to your support ticket with information on how your account was started, as well as that refund. Please let us know if you have any other questions on that support ticket. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I subscribed to Scribd back in 2014, and really enjoyed the service. Until a couple of months ago, that is. In July 2016, I was prompted to switch my account to a yearly subscription instead of monthly. Considering it would be cheaper overall, I did it. Little did I know that instead of allowing my current account to continue as a yearly subscription, for some reason it created a duplicate account and I was continued to be charged the $8.99 a month. In August, I canceled the monthly subscription, with the logical assumption that the yearly subscription would kick in. It didn't. Now, not only can I not access my account - it says my account is expired - I can't get any help from anyone at Scribd. I have been back and forth with Diana R. And getting no where. She told me that since I purchased the service through iTunes that she couldn't help me. So, it appears that I am going to be out not only the $84.99 I paid for the yearly subscription that is technically active, but also the $17.98 for the two months I was double charged. I haven't given up, and if this gets resolved, I will come back and update my review.

This company is a scam! We are repeatedly charged every month for a service we did not order on a credit card we do not use! The only replies we get from the company (e-mail only) are asking for more information. Ticket # *******.
Fred T.
Hi Fred. I can see that our support rep Gary replied with further information regarding the issue on your ticket. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support.
I wanted to sign up for the free trial period, so i signed up and put in my credit card info, clicked the button and the page just blinked. Nothing else happened. I didnt get an email or anything to confirm whether or not it went thru. If possible i would like to cancel this subscription immediately since i cant access anything on the website anyway.

Yesterday I registered for the trial period and entered my card details and the next thing I see in my bank statement is that the money has been debited, I have now cancelled the free trial period and I want my money back as soon as possible.
Hi Trilochan! We've just replied to your support ticket, but I'm providing this information here for you as well. I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding! It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support.
