The company's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning its subscription model and customer service. Many users report unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling subscriptions, and a lack of responsive support, leading to perceptions of deceptive practices. While some customers acknowledge the potential value of the service for avid readers, these positives are overshadowed by frustrations with the platform's functionality and the quality of customer interactions. Overall, the feedback indicates a pressing need for improved communication and more transparent billing practices to restore customer trust.

I was charged for the last 9 months or so, $8.99 for a service I NEVER EVER USED because I didn't check my credit card statement as I should. There was NO number for me to call the company. When I emailed them asking for FULL REFUND and CANCELLATION, they never responded to my email. I emailed scribd a SECOND time, and again, no response. This company is underhanded, unethical and I wish someone would sue them for fraud. They are unethical and their customer service is deliberately elusive so that it remains impossibly difficult for ANYONE to contact them (there is no number to call). Awful, awful company which should be ashamed and I am going to write on every review site and let everyone know they should NEVER be trusted with their credit card. Try Amazon and other services instead. STAY AWAY! Never do business with them. I wish I could given them ZERO stars, one star is too charitable for being one of the most unethical, swindling companies to exist in recent memory.
Required document was incomplete and outdated. Despite 30 day free subscription the $8.99 charge was made immediately to credit card. Steps to cancel subscription requires repeated input to stop subscription with no real assurance the subscription has been indeed cancelled. It was a mistake to connect with this service.
Hi there, That sounds like the verification transaction that is explained in the confirmation email you received upon sign up. It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! Our support team can confirm this for you, as well as your cancelation, if you could send us an email to help@scribd.com with your account email address. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Live conversations are not part of Scribd's customer service, nor is the 30 day FREE trial. I cancelled the service immediately after signing up, however while reviewing recent credit card charges I found the recurring $8.99 monthly charge. Only immediate recourse is to block further payments with Credit Card company until Scribd responds to this review.
More of my time, none of Scribd's.

I was online researching on certain information and bumped into the Scribd website. It touted 30-day free subscription so I thought I would give it a try to see what I could find. However, immediately after signing up the account, my credit card got charged the monthly fee of $8.99. When I used the customer service to send an email to complain, I received a response stating that a customer service person would get back to me in 6 business hours. It has been more than 3 business days and nothing has happened. Yesterday, I went to my account to cancel the account. Not only that it took me quite some efforts to find the way the effectuate cancellation of the account, but also, after the cancellation being acknowledged on the record, I was not able to unsubscribe the advertisement email. It would keep stating that I had to cancel the account before I could unsubscribe. What a shame business operation!
Hi Yee-Horn! We've replied to your ticket #1188616 with information about that verification transaction. Thanks so much! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Horrible company. I too was continued to be charged a monthly fee after I closed my account. I was ignored repeatedly with my request for refund and confirmation of account closed (I already had email confirmation from representative but that did not stop the charge's). I too had to dispute the charge with my Credit Card company and ultimately get a new card. Thanks for the annoyance of trying to do business with you Scribd.
Hi Jason! I sent you a message on Sitejabber last week and have yet to hear back. I'm happy to assist you with this, but will need to know your account email address, or the ticket # you received when you wrote in about this issue. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I signed up for a free trial and tried to cancel it five days later but got no email notification confirming my cancelation. I then tried to change my credit card information and it wouldn't let me. Next, I tried to delete my account and it said I still have an active membership. Finally, my credit card was charged 8.99 anyway and I had to get a NEW DEBIT card in order to stop them from stealing my money. I feel sorry for the other people who they stole a lot of money from...
Hi there! I sent you a private message on here on September 2, but have not heard back from you as of yet. Please let us know the ticket number you received when you wrote in to us, or the email address associated with your account. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support.
Hello,
I have a problem with my account. Ive made an account on Scribd.com on 17 of March 2013 and I closed it in a month. However, you still take my money from my account even in 2016! I have checked my credit card and I really have a problem when I see that, monthly, you took 9 euro from me, even if my account is closed.
Please contact me as soon as possible, regarding the invoices. I need you guarantee that the amount will be refunded to my credit card ( from April 2013 to August 2016). This is fraud.
Please take this e-mail like an official notification and let me know when my money will be back on me.
Hi Alina! I can see that our support representative Gary was able to resolve this issue for you on ticket #1180762. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support

I unfortunately have not been paying enough attention to my credit card statements. Now that I have I see that for at least the last 6 months this company has been charging me $8.99 a month. I had never heard of this company until I found the changes. And I have absolutely no recollection of ever signing up for any type of service. Now it is impossible to contact them to make certain this reoccurring charge stops. There is no phone number for customer service. Everything is email. I emailed and have yet to hear back. I want a phone number to speak to a human being and I want a refund of all monies taken without my consent. I agree 100% with the other reviews - this website site is a fraud. I'd tell you to avoid it at all costs but apparently that doesn't even work as I had never visited it and they have taken money from me for six months. Something needs done to stop this
Hi Peggy! I can see that our support representative Nikki was able to resolve this issue for you via live chat. Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
Got a notification from my credit card that they charged me **the minute** I signed up for a FREE TRIAL. They are thieves.
Hi Teresa! I'm so sorry for any confusion here. We try to make this very clear in the confirmation email you received and! Apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! Let us know if you have any other questions via support@scribd.com. Like many others, I've been scammed into monthly subscription of $8,99 every month. When I tried to cancel my subscription, there wasn't such an option in my account. When I tried to contact support, I got no response. I guess I have nothing left to do but announce to my bank that they are scammers and I need to block these payments on my bank level.
Hi Maria, I sent you a message on here on August 15, but have yet to hear back from you. I'm more than happy to assist you here but I will need to know the ticket number you received when you wrote in to us, or the email address you used when you wrote in. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I was lucky enough to notice their subscription fee in my bank account before they were able to steal anymore money from me. I have no recollection whatsoever of signing up for their service and have a very, very difficult time believing I ever did. I never used anything from their site - no books, nothing, and they refuse to refund me. If the other reviews on this site haven't told you enough - this site/service is totally fraud and they're absolute thieves, do your best to avoid it thought that still might not be enough. They've clearly been scamming people through their b. S. subscription for a long time now. We can only hope they're brought to justice ASAP.
Hi Chris, We've just replied to your follow up email on ticket #1152785. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Stay away! I got into their premium membership service on a 14-day trial period. Figured if I didn't find decent material that justified paying a monthly fee I'd just cancel it before this two week trial expired and keep my money. However, three days later I got a PayPal e-mail notifying me about a payment to someone I've never heard of, with some personal e-mail. When I called the PayPal customer service they informed me it was Scribd who had charged me, without my authorisation. Smells fishy, and reading other reviews here made me jump out of it before getting cheated further. Currently disputing the payment on PayPal.
STAY AWAY!
Hi Stefan! I tried to send you a message through SiteJabber on the 26th, but have not heard back yet. I'm more than happy to help with this if you can let me know the email address associated with your Scribd account. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
DO NOT USE! I cancelled my membership and was still billed. I tried contacting them through email since there's no number on their website, still waiting on a response.
Hi Angel! I'm happy to see that this has been resolved with our support rep Donni as of July 25th. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any further questions. Thanks again! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
After paying for over a year and accumulating credit for books and audio books one fine day they logged me out of the account and could never log back in. It kept on saying wring password. When I clicked the forgot password link and reset my password I was logged in as a new customer with no credits! Now I can't log in again with the new password even! They have eaten away all my credits... they are thieves... STAY AWAY frim Scribd!
Hi Naveen! I'm sorry for the trouble here. Our support rep Ben has just sent you a reply to your ticket #1136360 and more information on how to access your account. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Firstly I paused my membership during which I still was charged! Since I then decided that the paid version of Scribd didn't give enough value to keep paying every month, I decided to cancel. In my feedback I wrote to them that I just found it unbelievable that they could still charge me while I had paused my membership, on which I never received a reply. Very customer-unfriendly. Every single dollar spent on Scribd after the first month of membership for me was money thrown away.
Hi Carli! I'm sorry for the trouble here. I do see that one of our support reps, April, did reply to you on July 5,2016 and has refunded your charge that occurred prior to the pausing of your subscription. Please let us know if you have any other qusetions! Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Was enticed to join after reading a couple of chapters of a book on their site for free and wishing to continue. Turns out the rest of the book isn't on their site. What a con.
Now I'm going to go to Paypal and make sure no payments come out as it was allegedly a free trial. And as to your answer to my complaint I just don't buy it. It appears your server locked on to my search for this book then lured me in with a couple of chapters. I mean who would go to the bother of sticking two chapters of a book online and nothing else?
Hi John! I'm sorry for the trouble here, it sounds like you accessed one of our documents uploaded and maintained by a member rather than one of our books from a publisher. We're more than happy to ensure that your free trial is canceled! Please email us at help@scribd.com and we can assist. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Horrible customer service. Book credits were lost because I had a family emergency and did not use them and customer service would not restore them. They take weeks even months to respond to you and the library does not specifically label what books you own and which you do not.
Hi Ricky! I'm so glad that our support manager Allison was able to assist you with this and resolve the issues you were experiencing with your credits. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks again! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I signed up for a free trial then cancelled it before the trial ended. I have not used the website at all yet I have been billed for a premium membership for 3 months. The website even stated that I no longer had a premium membership yet once i again I have been billed $8.99 per month. I deactivated my account about two weeks ago and I am still getting billed. They have the absolute worst customer service and there's no phone service.
Hi Felicity! I'm so sorry for the frustration here. I do see that our support rep Courtney did send you a reply regarding your account and your refunds on July 11,2016. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I did cancle membership several month ago, but today I found out I've been charged every month for membership. If I don't recieve my credit card notification, I never know SCRIBD website charging my money without any notice. There are no phone call customer service, and I send message from SCRIBD online, but not response. I'm thinking about to file this case to court to get fair decision, My money should be refunded.

I signed up for a temporary/trial membership with Scribd, but never used it as it was confusing. The rules for cost of membership, number of books received monthly, etc., was unclear. 15 months later I came across the site to remove it from my list. I still had an account, so decided to close it. Without any notice or emails regarding payment. Etc., Scribd had been charging me a monthly fee of 8.99 since early 2015. I have just sent them an email to close this account as well as give me access to the books I have paid for. I am waiting for their response, but would not recommend them at this time for reasons mentioned above (lack of transparency, rules that are confusing and unclear) as well as their inability to create a trusting relationship between a consumer and their company. I eagerly wait for their response regarding how to repair this.
