Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

Your better off booking a room with a hobo. I don't know who trains their customer service staff but they are awful and need to be let go. This is the worst company in the world.
I booked a stay and it showed a day before stay cancelation, took pets. After I paid $710 for the stay and cancelled 4 days prior the policy was changed to within 48 hours of booking. The app was acting funny 2 days before canceling. Airbnb will not help get the money refunded on a stay I am not going on. Be very careful. If you use this have your own copies and DO NOT rely on their app. After this experience I looked up the company listing and it has 1 star reviews. Why would Airbnb support them over the customer? They havd gaslight me trying to recover the money and a huge hassle. Hotels don't do this garbage. Be careful. I can't give a zero or below zero rating but what they did was low down.
I used Airbnb for the first time this past July 4 for a place in Pigeon Forge TN. Pictures appeared fine, the process seemed good.
Then the first red-flag occurred. Found out the house was actually for-sale. Not good. This was not disclosed in the Airbnb ad. We found out but perusing through a Realtor site and came across the house. Fortunately, Airbnb was quick to contact the host and found out, yes, they did indeed have the house for sale, however, the host was still going to honor our reservation. No viewings and no sale until after we left. Okay, blood-pressure, go back down.
Next was traffic. We were told, by the host, the road was not busy and we would not hear the traffic. Wrong, we did. Not pleasant but we tolerated it.
Next were the accommodations. The upstairs bedroom, apparently the master suite, had a window A/C and the central was blowing-out warm air. Not comfortable. The shower was extremely small even though the pix made it appear large. The entire bathroom floor was slanting. The shower leaked. Basically, a pitiful time with lots of anxiety on the safety of the room. Also smelled mold.
Overall, I gave the place a 2 out of 5 star review and cited the issues. There was nothing the host could do since the issues would take time to rectify and we had no other places for the holiday weekend.
Airbnb and the host did communicate with us, however, the host also demonstrated lots of attitude, especially upon seeing my negative review. They actually demanded, in e-mail, to have it changed. I refused.
Guess what?
That review is no longer on their Airbnb listing. Sweet Starlene I believe is the name. The host removed my review there, so, figured leave something about it here.
We've NEVER had issues like this with VRBO. And like I said, Airbnb themselves seemed fine. Its just that Airbnb let the host remove an honest review. That I do not like about the platform. If we're not allowed to have our reviews which meet the Airbnb standards be left, whats the use in using them?
Complete disregard for family safety during a mandatory hurricane evacuation. No refund of any kind, just a link to the tiniest "policy" about hurricane season. And, mandatory request: put all the patio furniture inside the property. This was followed by a threatening (yes!) text and phone call about the banning me from air bnb because we asked for partial refund due to "mandatory!" evacuation. As a longtime air bnb costumer, this experience was beyond the pale in disregard for family safety and doing the right thing.
Want to use Airbnb? Think again, you deserve better.
What is the most important thing when going on a trip? Nice views? Good company? Amazing food? That's all important, but to enjoy that, you want to have a habitable, hassle-free place to stay. And ideally, not overpaying for the stay. This is why you may want to think hard before using Airbnb.
Let's start with the basics – what are the basics to expect from a 'room'? Walls? A ceiling? A floor? And it shouldn't have massive holes in the wall unless it's for a door or window, right? That is not the case for the Airbnb place we booked. We had 2 bedrooms, both with windows, that won't shut. Which, of course, our host failed to mention when we made the booking. Look at our photos; when the windows are 'fully closed' there are still gaps around the frame I can fit my finger through. What would you call sleeping when exposed to the wind and cold (no heating provided in the rooms, of course…) during winter when it can hit 0 degrees Celcius at night? Sleeping rough?
And if you think Airbnb will cover you if things go wrong – think again, hard. We cancelled our 4-night stay at this place less than 24 hours after checking in. Sorry, but I am not ready to sleep rough for 4 nights. What did Airbnb say when we contacted them for support and a partial refund? Airbnb told us to continue staying there, "the host is not allowing us to process any refund", and (I am quoting this) "broken window isn't eligible under AirCover for guests".
So, after many calls and headaches (we even had to phone the Airbnb US office because, apparently, Airbnb can't call us back), we still had to pay more than A$1000 for a 1-night stay while sleeping rough.
Do you want to go through the same? Think again. You deserve better!
Airbnb do not respond to complaints and do not appear to have a competent procedure.Contact made to the director companies house with no response either.Raised a simple procedure with the Sheriff Court for failing to make payment to owners.
I have been a host for Airbnb for over 4 years. I have found that they don't want to help their hosts. I have had things stolen, broken, destroyed, and when I gave the details to Airbnb, they didn't care, they cater to the guests. I have been treated like a second-class citizen and harassed by them, accusing me of lying, and making it up even though I have photos. My last guest was a psycho and I had to call the police to have her escorted out, and still Airbnb didn't care. She not only stole from me, she hid things out in the shed and threw things out in the yard; but still Airbnb, even with photos, didn't believe me.
I will never do business with them on any level. They are destroying themselves all on their own. Hence all the bad ratings.
Thinking of listing your property on Airbnb? Don't, they nickel and dime you to death. You are much better off listing your property on FB or Craigslist and keeping Airbnb's hands off your money. I am a "Superhost" on Airbnb with all 5 star reviews by guests. However, because Airbnb has been so criticized by ripped-off guests, they have started giving away Host's money for the most trivial complaints. It ups their reviews by guests and doesn't cost them anything. Stay away.
First off this app asks for a lot of information and there is no evidence that the same is being asked of the host. If you value your safety don't use this app, host kept house doors unlocked 24/7 as opposed to having a room key, that's unacceptable. Host also didn't have control of her animals living in the house. Host requested outside contact information. Overall the stay was low quality and didn't feel like a 'bnb'. Overall I would not recommend this app.
Booked a business stay through Airbnb. The house was infested with cockroaches. They did refund all money except cleaning fee and one night stay. (Was there less than 24 hours) I was also promised a 50% off coupon for future stay that would need to be used within one year. I was booking a short getaway, thought I would use the coupon. Surprise! Airbnb now has no record of this. When speaking to a representative with Airbnb they said someone would call me in regards to this. I ask when bc I was trying to book the stay. Her words were "sometime" I said sometime she said "yes sometime". Seriously! It isn't necessarily about the money I DO NOT LIKE TO BE LIED TO! I do travel a lot for work and relaxation. I will not book through Airbnb again!
Airbnb cancelled our prepaid reservation at the last moment and ruined our vacation plans. We prepaid the reservation 3 weeks in advance. On the day before our 9 hour drive to that location, we discovered that we had never received a reservation destination address. We asked by email: What is the address? We were told by the "host" that the address would not be provided until the day of the arrival and apparently not until shortly before arrival because the "host did not want people arriving early". We emailed back that never before in all our travels had our destination address been kept a secret. We emailed a strong demand note requesting the address. The address was finally sent, but then our reservation was cancelled "because we were too aggressive and host did not like that". Thus ended our
One and only attempt to use Airbnb. We are warning our large circle of family, friends, and business acquaintances to avoid Airbnb like the plague.
Save yourself the trouble and never rent a vacation home through Airbnb. They are a Scam and extort money from guests.
I have tried to work with Airbnb after a host failed to make everything right after our visit. They did nothing and blamed it on their existing 'policies'. We have pictures, communication and everything. It got us nowhere and no return of any money, or at least housekeeping fee refunded. Beds were not made upon arrival, appliances not working, pool issues, and the list could go on.
Airbnb is scammer horrible co that should be out of business. Why are they so popular if they have 1.5 star ratings on average? I was a super host with all 5 star reviews worked hard to build that status and suddenly they disactivated my Account with barely any explanation and canceled my reservations as Not Legitimate. I am 1000% legit with STR licenses, ownership docs, ID verified thats why they had me for years. It was heart wrenching pain as my business solely relied on income from my rentals. Customer service is non existent, all they're trained to do is BRUSH OFF, tell specialized team will reach out within 24Hrs. Over 2 days no one reached out. Terrible, Shocking Experience. Wrote complaint on BBB among thousands of others. Had Reservation check in today and guest was strangled without me having ability to send guest message with check in instructions. No matter how much I asked to help with this guest by giving him my ph as his didn't work, they refused to help. Lost $thousands, devastated. Airbnb should be bankrupted. If all world could just boycott them and stop using. They deserve to go down for all the pain they caused others
Airbnb all of a sudden started sending less money than usual for an experience we have listed on their platform. Our price for the experience is set in Costarican Colones. This amount should never change as it is the price set. We receive the payout in US$ and it is normal that this amount varies depending on the exchange rate of the day. The strange thing is that now they calculate the exchange into USD over a lower amount in Colones, which is different from the one set. Their explanation: You have some exchange rate issues... I tried to contact them several times. If you want to interact with a person, this is extremely difficult. They do not like to publish their phone numbers, and when I finally managed to find one, I had to pay for the international call. Plus the person who attended me, couldn't give any satisfactory explanation and closed the case. I still receive less money than expected
I have decided not to use airbnb anymore because despite my multiple contacts about deceptive over charges on one of my past stays in a miami airbnb, I was never refunded my money and their customer service persons (apparently in India and somewhere else) just kept dragging and not any resolving my complaints.
I will also be recommending to my relatives and friends not to use airbnb.

"very poor customer support; had a very frustrating experience during the sign-up, verification, and attempted booking. My booking was confirmed and taken by someone else because the verification process failed multiple times without clear explanation on how to fix it (even after calling support lines twice, I wasn't helpfully assisted at bloody all).
If you have an alternative, you should definitely go with that."
I rented a place in Centroamerica. The place looked great, but when I get there, it was not possible even to reach the property. A lot of drinking neighbors were around the property with fully noisy music. Parking there was also complicated because the place was the end of a long narrow street surrounded by crowded houses with risk someone could park further in the street and let the car lock in place for hours. I just left area in a hurry, and asked for cancelation, but a rude host denied, and incredibly airbnb backed the guy. According with airbnb, in this case the host cannot control the place surroundings, that means if you rent a place that you just find at arrival is surrounded by hot volcano lava, then that is OK and you just lost the money because the host does not have any control of the property surroundings. An absolutely ridiculous airbnb policy. Avoid airbnb at any cost! The risk doesn't outweigh any money saving there.
BEWARE: I booked a reservation with a super-host that turned out to be in a very remote rural location that was ultimately inaccessable. After trying repeately to contact the host without success I had to book a last minute hotel late at night. The following day I spend hours trying to resolve it with AirBnB, but they refused to help and informed me that I could not even cancel. After hours and hours on the phone in subsequent calls with AirBnB it became obvious that they were not going to help me. In addition to paying for a very last minute late night hotel I lost all of the money with the AirBnB reservation and was told repeatedly by AirBnB that hosts do not have to reimburse if they do not want to, regardless of the circumstances. In essence, they don't vet their hosts or listings and have iron-clad contracts that go against the guests. Additionally, Airbnb told me that somehow the host was the one loosing money on my not showing up (?), and has refused to have a supervisor contact me even though they promised it would happen. Lastly, they took down my review that simply stated the facts. I feel like I was taken by a scam and am left wondering how to sue a $B company.
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
